Emo Kids - what does it mean?

Okay, well, this is getting really annoying. But I'll explain this crap anyhow...

Emo Kids: Melodramatic kids who: wear black regardless if it's summer; cut themselves; put too much eye makeup; have choppy haircuts (that make them look like they haven't brushed their hair their whole lives).

Music: Listen to bands who sound like they're tigers about to feast on a Thanksgiving meal. But they're actually screaming about how "terrible" their lives are and how their hearts are "broken" and they cannot find another girl/boy in their lives ever again. Example: Brokencyde, Bullet For My Valentine (an example for an "emo" band name), etc.

Looks: Shop at Hot Topic. "Emo" kids wear usually all black clothes. Their shoes have either skulls on it, or it's a walking diary. Boys usually wear eyeliner and have black nail polish. I find that weird.
Girls have raccoon looking eye-makeup and hair that looks like they haven't brushed it for days. Also, girls usually dye their hair an abnormal color so people may make fun of them more. Boys AND girls must wear skinny jeans regardless the season.

Personality: "No one understands me. People make fun of me at school just because I'm different. Ughh....I just want to die." That explains a LOT.

Sexuality: Both sexes are usually bisexual. And the boys aren't afraid to show it...

regular boy: hey, are you wearing girl jeans?
emo boy: -closes eyes while listening to screaming- yes.
regular boy: ....that's pretty weird. are you gay?
emo boy: don't. talk. to. me. -sighs- you just don't understand...

Emo Kids - meaning

An Emo Kid is a term used to identify not one, but many different styles of dress, music and life styles, so this will be a rather broad definition. But, to make it easier, I will give the definition of only three different kinds of Emo kids. I am emo so I know what I am talking about.
1) There is the "Hard Core" Emo, who listens to very heavy music, usually made by under ground bands, but could possibly be semi mainstream. Examples of Hardcore Emo music would be bands such as Bring Me the Horizon, Arch Enemy, Berzeker, and others like that. These kids who are Hardcore Emos, dress in typical black and white, but are now moving to color, wearing lumberjack plaid and darker colors. They almost always have long hair, which is brushed over just above the eyebrows, not in front of but over. This is the kind of Emo that are not noticed as much as the others because they are not vocal about being Emo, but in all actuality they are the most common form of "Emo".
2) Now we come to the more stereotypical Emo, the one that listens to mellow Indie music and cries a lot (even though they don’t, a lot of people think they do). These Emo's are Emo even though they don't wear all black; instead they wear light colored cloths like white button down shirts and pale green scarves. Unlike the other forms of Emo Kids, you will rarely see these kids in Hot Topic, they more like thrift stores, or GAP, or sometimes American Eagle and Hollister (I know, it's really surprising!) We, in the Emo Subculture, call these kids Indie Emo, or just Emo. They listen to slightly more known bands like Death Cab for Cutie, Gym Class Heroes, Snow Patrol, and Playradioplay!. (Note to editor, Playradioplay! is the actual band name so don't "correct" that particular grammar mistake) These Emos are actually pretty rare to find, but they start most of the Emo styles.
3) Now this kind of β€œEmo” makes the rest of us in the subculture pretty mad. Now I will tell you why: because they aren’t, but they are the most vocal about being Emo. They are the ones who listen to bands like My Chemical Romance, Three Days Grace, and all the other mainstream bands that real Emo Kids hate (Nothing against those bands if you happen to like them, but real Emo Kids just don’t like them). They are the kids who give Emos a bad name, with wrist slitting, crying a lot, and β€œEmo Kissing”. Real Emo’s call these kids, β€œWanna-be Emo”, or if they are being nice, β€œAltern-Emo’s”. They are not real Emo’s. Most of these Kids are bi or homosexual in some form or another.

The point to all of this is that I got on here and, as an Emo, got annoyed by the people out side the Emo subculture trying to define an Emo. I kept seeing only the definition of the "Altern-Emo", so i thought i would put some light on this subject.

So now to a more broad definition that will completely remove β€œAltern-Emos” from the picture. Real Emos don’t listen to very much if any mainstream music, whether it be Death-core metal, or underground indie, it is usually not heard of by anyone other than the people in that subculture. They usually write a lot of poetry about love, life, friends, or the lack of all the above. Emo’s are very interested in art that has hidden meanings or dark symbolism imbedded in it, and most of the time only the artist knows what the symbolism is or what the hidden meaning of his/her picture or poetry is. They may or may not be involved with their family, depending on the person. Emos almost always have gone through trying Family or friend situations and while trying to deal with it turned to music and art, which usually leads them to being full fledged Emo.

Emo Kids

Emo-kids can be children ages 11-13 or teenagers ages 13-19. β€œFlippy Hair” characterizes Emo Kids. Emo boys will often have short hair in the back, but outrageously long bangs that may be dyed or not. It is usually flipped to one side. Emo boys may choose to straighten their hair or not. Colors are optional but will earn extra emo points. Emo girls will usually have dead straight hair with colored side-bangs. Usually red or pink. Emo clothing and scene clothing are very similar. Most often, both sexes will choose to wear girl jeans, or extremely tight pencil jeans. Jeans may vary in color from light blue corduroys to jet black jeans. Emo boys often wear a band shirt portraying either: skulls, guns, blood, hearts, or crying children. Emo girls will be found wearing shirts with robots, hearts, or various sayings on them. Some emo clothing may even be outrageous. Emo kids will always wear black, purple, crimson, or dark grey. Emo clothes for both sexes must be extremely tight. Because of their choice of clothing, they are often mistaken for scenekids. Emo kids will rarely wear Vans. Both sexes chose to wear a Vans imitation called Airwalk. These shoes will most likely be black and have skulls or guns on it. Emo kids are obsessed with death and most often talk about it. The kind of music that emo-kids listen to may vary from Screamo to Mainstream to Underground Punk. Some bands that emo kids may listen to include: Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Saosin, From Autumn To Ashes, Killing Hannah, Leftover Crack, and Emmure. The band to start the emo craze was Rites of Spring. This band was very popular with subcultures in the 80s and early 90s. At shows, emo-kids will often stand and sing the lyrics with their eyes closed. It is very rare to see an emo-kid mosh or hardcore dance. Emo-kids are the most educated out of the modern subcultures. They enjoy reading books and writing poetry. Emo poetry is usually sad, depressing, and about the pains of life. Emo-kids often talk about suicide, but most never go through with it. Although emo-kids claim to be sXc (straightedge), they have pictures of themselves smoking and drinking on myspace and facebook. Emo boys and girls will often have gauges and lip piercings. Some accessories that both sexes can be found wearing are: pins, buttons, handbags (or man purses), backpacks, rings, earrings, white studded belts, and nose rings. Emo boys will often wear eyeliner and paint their nails black. Emo-kids are the most hated out of all of the modern subcultures. They are often made fun of by conformists and other social classes. Most people pretend to be emo or use the expression β€œCheer up Emo Kid!” These comments can be hurtful to emo-kids and this is why emo-kids don’t often talk to other people other than emo-kids. Making fun of emo-kids is not right, and they should be left alone. Emo-kids are not accepted by any of the subcultures, other than their own. Occasionally some scenekids will hangout with an emo-kid, but it is very rare.

Emo Girl: Hey.
Emo Guy: Hey.
Emo Girl: Lifes pretty bad huh?
Emo Guy: Yeah.
Prep: LAWLZ U GUYZ R EMO
Emo Guy: Conformist..
Emo Girl: Yeah, we're such emo kids.

Emo Kids

First, I am going to tell you what emo is not.
Emo is not "omgzz i'm gonna go slit my wrists." It is not the stereotypical tight jeans and shirts on both sexes. Emo is not always a genre of music.
Emo means (and please don't get all mad at me, but this is what my experience tells me) means pretty much emotional.
Now, it doesn't mean that the kid is always depressed and sad and mopey, it just means that the kid goes through mood swings relatively fast.
Now, emo kids can be seen wearing a typical tight demeanor (tight clothing) with flats, odd, clashing accessories, and greasy (or not) hair with long bangs. Black eyeliner as well. But this does not mean that all emo's wear the same thing. They can wear whatever the hell they want, but this style attracts lots of Emo Kids.
Some emo kids are actually always depressed, but I like to call these... depressed kids. NOT emo's. These are the kind of kids who give a bad name to emo's and are the main stereotype for emo's.
I don't really understand why everybody thinks it's funny to stereotype emo's as suicide victims and ungrateful depressed people.
It's not really like that.

Emo kid 1 : My boyfriend broke up with me.
Emo Kid 2 : Thats too bad. Wanna come over to watch a movie?
Emo Kid 1 : Yeah, that'd be fun. I can show you my new skinny jeans.
Emo Kids 2 : Rad. Come on over.

SEEEE?

Emo Kids

A kid who is usually emotional. They don't want to make their feelings public and end up expressing it mainly through poetry or songs. They listen to what they want to a don't care what others say about their tastes or likes. They are true to themselves and don't change like most scene kids. They don't shop at hot topic 24/7 and usually buy clothes that are more so comfortable than stylish. Dark colors are popular but it's not always black. They do not catagorize themselves as emo, others around them do this. When they cut, they usually intend on finishing it off or making it nice and deep. Scene kids usually scratch or draw fakes scars on themselves. Emo kids are not concearned with the likes or dislikes of others that are minescule to them. Emo kids also tend to stick with others that understand them better such as other emos and they care for their pack. Emos may seem like rebels or punks, but they rebel only if they believe in something. You will see them laughing and enjoying themselves because all people do. They think many things are very beautiful and they are saddened by the fact that so many people fail to see this and destroy it, what ever it may be. They don't look for acceptance, they except themselves.

NOT EMO KIDS-
Scene kids show off "cuts" on wrists or arms, ect. They want everyone to know about problems. They wear the newest clotes that they can find at to topic and wear it to look cool. They rebel against anything because they think its cool. They want to fit in with anything and they hate everything in life because they are little faggs that can't appreciate any beauty what so ever. They change to fit most peoples approval and are just fake and shady in general.
