Otherkin - what is it?

A person who has inherited the traits of something of another being. This can be any of the few mentioned, as well as others. These traits are usually recognized during times of great upheaval in the individual's life, known as an Awakening.

Recently, due to the popularity and drive for belonging, many new 'kin' have arisen. Because of the popularity of the idea, and because of the increase in roleplaying, many of these new kin are false, and merely imitating it in order to find acceptance in a group. In other words, they are chasing a trend to feel part of something. These imitators are usually the members of the otherkin community that tend to give true otherkin the bad reputation many of the members on this website have given them. Also, those that become overly defensive and hostile contribute to this, and do not benefit any members of the community by making subtle threats.

Most otherkin live totally normal lives, with jobs, families and anything else a normal person enjoys. They simply live with the knowledge of being something more than just a regular being, and that leads them to discover what it is about them that is so different. The otherkin that gain bad reputations are not the norm, and others of the kin community should not be judged by the actions of those that gain notice.

1.) The kid on the forum claimed to be Posiden, as an otherkin. Both kin and non-kin alike knew he was an idiot.

2.) James always felt a desire in his heart for things beyond what he felt was real and normal, and discovered his otherkin traits through a difficult Awakening.

3.) People that mock otherkin are only insulting those who can't rise above petty insults, who are usually the least sincere about their experiences.

What does "otherkin" mean?

Otherkin is a group of people who believe that in some way, they are not completely human. Some think they are a reincarnation of mythological beings, aliens, animals native to this planet, etc. Others think they've descended from ancient elvish or fae bloodlines and what have you. Probably most rarely, even some believe that they are existing on this plane in their "trueform" but under a "seeming," which from what I know is some sort of magical disguise.
While a vast majority of 'kin are most likely vying for attention and many may indeed be delusional, there are those who lead quite normal lives and are quite happy with the way things are.

"I never would have guessed, but my friend is an otherkin. She seemed so normal, too."
"The otherkin just wanted a place to relax, but it seemed that even on their own turf the flamers would not give them peace."

Otherkin - what does it mean?

A person or persons who identifies with something other than human, be it a wolf, a cat, a tree, a blobfish, a dragon, an empty pepsi can, an asteroid; the possibilities are limitless. It's been around for about a decade, but it only became well-known--aha, sorry, a trend--a year or so ago (take note of the date this definition was posted) via Tumblr.

Upon visiting a site which is swarming with these delusional people, mostly Tumblr, DeviantArt, or FurAffinity, one may suddenly realize that they are the reincarnation of a half-dragon half-plant and join their ranks.

Otherkin claim that their struggles are on par with those of trans* individuals and similar, when in reality they just want to be a special snowflake. They often tell people to use pronouns such as kin/kinself when referring to them. Which sounds kind of stupid when you use it in conversation, to be honest.

"Ella seems to be under the impression that she's a plant, John. What do we do?"
"She seems to be in her otherkin phase. Let's just pray for her."

Otherkin - meaning

Crazy people on the internet who desperately try to make themselves seem cool by claiming to be a reincarnated version of some kind of popular, charismatic animal or a monster they heard about in a roleplaying game. Usually they justify this by insisting their daydreams have some kind of bearing on the real world. It generally does not work, except with fellow otherkin and of course furries.

Lately the otherkin have branched off into even more mind-bogglingly insane territory with the otakukin movement.

I don't care how big the wingspan of your fifty-foot-tall-humanoid-dragon-soul is, Mr. Otherkin. I still don't like you.

Otherkin - slang

Typically, an overweight web designer (i.e. unemployed) adolescent who discovered the reason they were bullied as a child was due to the fact they are spiritually a reincarnated dragon, angel, vampire and/ or cack-faced unicorn demi-god, and not because almost all children are bullied at one stage or another.

Many otherkin have a deep resentment for humanity and preach mankind’s tyranny, while simultaneously claiming all discrimination is bad. Otherkin believe themselves separate from society and above the mundane stresses and problems of normal life. Otherkin generally believe themselves to have superior intelligence and see themselves are truly above our evil consumerist world.
Unsurprisingly, the number of otherkin popping up out of the woodwork after the advent of the Internet has swelled their ranks considerably.

1. Despite preaching tolerance for one another's belief, anyone who does not blindly share the otherkin belief becomes a narrow-minded mundane who is unable to think for themselves, despite the glaring contradiction.

2. The highly intelligent otherkin posted an apology to themselves on UD under another person’s alias in an attempt to win a one-sided crusade against the oppression of idiots worldwide.

3. My name is Drakonstar2000_babe, who lived a past life as a dragon, making me an otherkin. I am currently a gryphon living inside a human body, if you disagree then you are a close-minded hy00man.

B) Believes that, in a past life, they were not physically human;

C) Believes that they are a human vampire who needs a supply of energy to remain healthy.

Otherkin

Those individuals who believe that although born human, their souls are those of a non-human being, animal or mythical creature. Many believe that they are reincarnations of such beings and are able to access memories of previous lives.
The movement is the source of much controversy, ranging form philisophical/intelectual and spiritual debate to mud-slinging, derision and name calling. Some 'kin are happy to lead what the great majority of people would describe as "normal" lives, finding solace, support and companionship amongst their fellows, free to explore the nature of their seemingly paradoxial existance. While others may appear eccentric, arrogant or insane to the bulk of the populace. It must be noted that as with all groups, organisations or belief systems the actions of a few can lead to a negative perception of the group as a whole in the eyes of others.Indeed some Otherkin view themselves as superior to "mundane" humans, blaming the modern ills of society and the world as a whole on humanity.

Believing themselves to at least partly inhuman. Otherkin are oft treated with hostillity.

Otherkin

n., sing. or pl. A person who holds the belief that they are not entirely (or not at all) human. Usually a spiritual belief pertaining to one's soul and the reincarnation thereof, but may also be a belief that one's genetics are descended from, for example, the Irish fae. The word Otherkin was coined to describe people who felt a connection to mythological humanoids such as elves and faeries, but has expanded in recent years to include dragons, gryphons/griffins and other supposedly mythical beasts as well as animals, angelic/demonic beings (angelkin/demonkin) and in some cases extraterrestrials.
