A book by the Canadian author Douglas Coupland, thought to epitomize a particularly jaded and ironic generation of slackers.

Generation x - what is it?
The 45 million people born between 1965 and 1976. Dubbed Generation "X" because they have no war, depression or other socioeconomic condition to identify themselves with. (i.e. Malcom "X"-has no family name, thus he must go by his given name.)
Mountain Dew's use of extreme sports in advertising targeted to Generation Xers helped boost the brand's market share to fourth in the soft drink category.
What does "generation x" mean?
1) The generation that was maligned by the Boomers because we are not Boomers
2) The generation that finally reintroduced good music after the horror of the late 1980s.

Generation x - what does it mean?
An entire generation of children born in the early 60s to early 80s, now adults in their 20s-40s. No set timeframe can be agreed upon as some claim that children actually born in the 1980s are not Gen-Xers. The traditional timeframe for Gen-Xers has been said to be 1961-1981 by sociologists but others have proposed timeframes such as 1960-1970, 1965-1975, 1965-1977, 1964-1982, 1970-1983, and 1961-1984.
Generation X ranges in age between 20-somethings to people in their early 40s.
Generation x - meaning
A tech savvy generation with the unfortunate distinction of being born after the Boomer generation and thus having to suffer through the worse childhood of any generation.
Generally, for those who survived being spoiled rotten or beaten by their parents, they became happy, outgoing, and very innovative. For those who had to fight their way out they became leaders, innovators, and strong willed.
Criticized for being slackers but surviving the boomer generation would take the energy and initiative out of anybody.

Generation x - definition
The generation born right around the end of the 1960s baby boomer cultural takeover, basically anyone born after 1965 (Dylan going electric) and before 1977 (so that you'd hafta be at least 1 yr. old when Star Wars came out). The title Generation X was designated by the media to indicate a distinct group population for marketing purposes. Generation X members are generally considered laid back (slackers), market savvy (having been inundated by the mass media and MTV since their pre-teen years), prone to psychological disorders (the first generation with a majority to have grown up with absent or divorced parents), and considered less important than baby boomers (who are btw the egomaniacal bastids to make that distinction in the first place, sheesh). Generational trends however suggest that Gen Xers are smarter than people think, are more capable and hard working than expected, and will eventually rule the world by lining up the baby boomer bastids against the wall when the revolution comes!

Generation x - slang
The smallest, most overlooked, neglected, and forgotten generation in the 20th century. All of them as of this writing are between 40 and 60 years old and their children are mostly late-wave Millennials and early wave Z’ers. The core X’ers were children in the 1970’s and teenagers in the 1980’s. They were the most cynical and self-sufficient growing up and the last generation raised without political correctness, overprotective parents, stranger danger, mollycoddling, and homosexuality unacceptable in most of American society. They were the first generation to become tech-savvy and enjoy music videos on MTV.To this day, few of them are running society and the Baby Boomers are still dominating the corporate and political landscape despite being of retirement age.
Mike’s a Generation X’er. He was born in 1970, wore Izod shirts growing up, and favorite music groups are Metallica and Nirvana.

People in western countries born from the mid-1960s to 1980 approximately. You can imagine them as a blend of Boomers and Millennials in both good and bad traits but way more cynical. You might be cynical too if you were stuck between those two.

Generation X- (1957-1976)-The early part of this generation born btwn 1957-1962 are cusp years, but a great majority of them will tell you they identify with generation x more than the boom generation. It might have to do with the generation their parents were from. Some of the early Xers may have been the youngest child born to G.I. parents. They might have been influenced by older siblings and identify with the boom generation, but the first-born child to parents of the silent generation are more likely to be Xers. The silent generation married very young and were already having children in their early 20s. The silents also had a high divorce rate and a good portion of Xers grew up in a dysfunctional home. I can never understand why some like to start this generation at 1965 and as late as 1968. I was born in 1970 and always felt I was more on the tail end of this generation rather than the middle. It was not just about growing up in the 1990s. Our generation came to age in the 1980s and our youth culture lasted to the mid 1990s. Our generation did begin and end with Nirvana. You must have been coming of age when MTV, New wave and heavy metal music was popular during the 1980s, and you must have been old enough to remember the polices of the Regan era. Most of our distinctive members (poster boys) were born in the late 1950's and early 1960s. Tim Burton (1958), Bill Watterson (1958) wrote Calvin and Hobbes. Quentin Tarantino (1963) director of Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, Richard Linklater (1960) directed Slacker, Ben Stiller (1965) directed Reality Bites, Mike Judge (1962) directed and wrote Office Space, Bevis and Butthead, King of the Hill. Douglas Coupland (1961) wrote Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture. The bad boys of SNL, Rob Schneider (1963), Chris Farley (1964), David Spade (1964), Chris Rock (1965), and Adam Sandler (1966) were fired from SNL because the older generations did not get their humor. Most of the new wavers, hardcore punk musicians and thrash metalist were also born in the early 1960s. James Hetfield of Metallica (1963), Tom Araya of Slayer (1961), Axle Rose of GnR (1962), Henry Rollins of Black Flag (1961), Perry Farrell (1959) of Jane's Addiction and creator of the Lollapalooza festival. New Wave, Goth, Techno, Rap, and Electronica pioneers like Duran Duran, U2, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Iced T, Run DMC, Beastie Boys and R.E.M. were all born in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The core of the alternative rock bands like Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Marilyn Manson and Nirvana were all born in the early to late 1960s. The bands that came out of the very tail end of generation x developed the nu metal and emo sound that kids listen to today. Bands like Korn, Limp Biscuit, Linkin Park, Creed, Green Day, and Eminem were born in the early to mid 1970s. This period was also the beginning of the hip-hop culture that senator Obama likes to identify with.
