Definder - what does the word mean?

What is Punk?

Punk is a lifestyle.
A mental state.
The need to shake off all supression.
To be FREE.
Remember that word, Free.
It's listening to the Ramones in a basement with friends while smoking a blunt.
It's kicking over a sign and saying FUCK THAT.
It's defying the rules that you see to be unfit.
It's defying the system that you see to be stupid.
It's Punk.

A poser is that who will take this definition.
Go out, and do exactly what was written.
So.
FUCK YOU.

"A guy walks up to me and asks 'What's Punk?'. So I kick over a garbage can and say 'That's punk!'. So he kicks over the garbage can and says 'That's Punk?', and I say 'No that's trendy!"

Punk - what is it?

A punk is a male who has practical jokes played on them or is picked on, usually on a regular basis, by others (punk'd). Another use of the word refers to what older adults might call a male rebel teen or street low-life. A thug is sometimes called a punk.

What does "Punk" mean?

Punk is a type of music.

Punk is a way of thinking.

Punk is a way of believing.

Punk is not what you wear.

Punk is not Blink-182. (Sorry, folks...)

Punk is not Sum 41!

Punk, is believing what you what to believe. Punk is going against the world. Punk is not caring who stares at you says "OH MY, WHAT AN AWFUL PERSON THAT MUST BE!". Punk is feeling what you want to feel, being who you want to be, punk is being somebody.

Punk is not what you see television! Or hear on the radio. Or read about in books or magazines! Punk is not about being like all the guys with mohawks and chelseas!

PUNK IS ABOUT BEING DIFFERENT! IT'S ABOUT HAVING VOICE AND AN OPINION!

And it doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, happy or sad, black or white, catholic or atheist. It doesn't matter if you live in a house, an apartment, a basement or on the street! PUNK ACCEPTS ANYBODY! ANYBODY AND EVERYBODY!

"Oh, I'm so punk, because, I just bought a Sex Pistols t-shirt!"= No.

Punk - meaning

Punk isn't "all about the music". Punk isn't beating up people you don't like. Punk is rebelling against what you don't believe in. Punk is the DIY ethic. You are not a punk if you shop at Hot Topic. No, rephrase that, you aren't a punk if you claim to be one BECAUSE of the fact that you shop at Hot Topic. Many people say punk is not buying into big corporations. True, but its okay to give in every once in a while. Punk is not being a total asshole to everyone you see, and excluding people because they aren't "punk" enough. Punk is all about being you, not what MTV tells you to be.

And no, having a mohawk doesn't make you punk. Neither does watching SLC Punk.

Ignorant twit wearing Simple Plan shirt: Oh my god, I look totally punx rawks right now!!
Me: ...Are you stupid?
Ignorant twit: Whatever, you just wish you were a real punk.
Me: Jebus, you probably don't even know what DIY stands for. Pathetic...
Ignorant twit: Whatever, I have a Good Charlotte concert to go to.
Me: And I have a Bloodclots show to go to. Off with you!

Punk - slang

A late 20th century phenomenum. The greatest, most earth-shaking popular culture since rock'n'roll. Musically, an natural evolution of folk/protest music. For the people, by the people, an accessable documentaion of modern times. Genuine eccentricity for the modern age, lampooning all trends before it and sticking two fingers up to a confused and plastic world.

The Bus Station Loonies.
Ruptured Ambitions.
Dick Lucas.
Vivian Stanshall.
Ian Dury.
John Peel.
Punk is punk is punk is punk.

Punk

Punk is not a way you look, it's a state of mind. It's not mohawks and DIY Jackets. Typical Street Punk clothing may include mohawks, liberty spikes, combat boots, bondage pants (usually plaid), and leather or denim jackets. The MOST important thing I will tell you is just because you have a mohawk, doesn't mean you're punk. I myself had a mohawk, but I did it for idols(Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen, etc) not for fashion. Punk is truly a mindset of independence. The freedom America provides should let us do anything, Anarchy if you will. No stereotypes are true. 'A punk has a mohawk and wears combat boots,' Henry Rollins from the legendary Hardcore Punk band 'Black Flag' is very simplistic. Once again punk is not a fashion, but a mindset.

Person 1: Look at that guy! He's doing whatever he wants to!
Person 2: That's pretty punk.

LATER

Person 1: That guy is abiding by the rules, but he's got these huge spikes on his leather jacket.
Person 2: Poser punk.

Punk

A punk is a member of the "punk movement" from the 70's and 80's. These kids generally dressed in holey jeans and dirty t-shirts with old sneakers, mainly because they couldn't afford better apparal.

Punks were largly associated with the genre of rock and roll that was named for there movement. Punk bands were made up of punks and the music displayed the themes of the punk movement.

Punks generally believed in a few common principals:
1. They commonly felt that there was no future for them, and that they would end up in the same poverty that they had been born into. This usually caused them to act in somewhat destructive ways. They usually were angry at society for that they could not move up in the social ranks.
2. Punks were not in favor of the goverment. They felt that the government was unfair to people of there stature. Sinse they felt so against the goverment they usually acted out in ways opposite of what was politically correct.
3. Punkers generally liked things perceived as negative such as violance, anarchy, drugs, sex, and things of that type. They rejected the norm of society, probably because the norm of society had rejected them.
4. They enjoyed punk music and dressed poorly for the reasons previously stated.

Kid: Dad, you're from the 80's, what's a REAL punk?

Dad: Well I was a punk back in my day

Kid: Whatever dad, your hairs not green. Plus, you were POOR when you were a kid. You could NEVER afford the sick clothes all the punk kids wear.

Punk

A fucking idiot, that often has a band, or plays on drums. But, if a punk does not have a band, you can call your own siblings that, as an inside joke, or if they do something mean to you. If one of your friends comes up to you, and says that you're a punk, and runs away, that certainly means that they're mad at you, and that you should say sorry. But if you tell your friend or sibling something funny, and they start laughing, they may tell you "You Punk!" just because it was a very funny joke. A punk doesn't always have to be mean, but often appears to be weird, has a band, or often goes crazy. You'll often spot a punk doing a cartwheel, or doing a crazy made-up dance.

"Damn, Johannson, why are you being such an idiot?! Isn't it super easy to learn to play the piano?"
"I'm trying! Why are you being so mean, you PUNK!!"
