What is Nu metal?
A much-hated subgenre of metal or hard rock, depending on how you view it, that started in the early 90s.
The main characteristics of nu-metal are as follows:
1. Rather short, simplistic songs with some sort of pop hooks
2. Lyrics about personal issues and feelings
3. Lack of guitar solos (if any solos are present, they are usually ahort or not very complex)
4. Many bands take in some elements of funk and rap and mix it with heavy metal music (early Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc.)
5. Music which places more emphasis on lyrical meaning and image than technicality
While I agree that some nu-metal out there is quite terrible, a lot of nu-metal out there is hated for the wrong reasons. Some people hate it just because it's popular, some people hate it just because it has no solos, or some people hate it just because the lyrics are somewhat more emotional than lyrics of old-school metal.
Hating a band just because it's popular is like refusing to play a sport like, say, football, just because a lot of people love it. "No way, man! I'm TOTALEE underground and kvlt. I should not be doing any shit that more than 2 people are a part of. I must be DIFFERENT!1!" Honestly, no one cares if you're a rebel. No one is going to praise you or follow in your footsteps. Why must you try so hard to be different?
It's also pathetic to hate a song just because of the lack of technicality. "Ooo, look at me! I'm generic tr00 metal guitarist #628! I can wank off on a guitar and hit 6489789704 notes per second!!! I am so tr00 metal." Face it, some artists like Yngwie Malmsteen and Dragonforce may have a lot of skill and speed on guitar, but a lot of their songs get old REALLY fast. Speed does not always equal talent. There's more to songwriting than making sure that every song has more than 10,000 notes in it, and if you can't understand that, then you obviously know nothing about music.
Also, what's wrong with emotional lyrics? Even "real metal" bands like Megadeth and Dream Theater bring lots of emotion into their songs (Megadeth - Trust, or Dream Theater - The Glass Prison), but are they hated for that? No. Why should nu-metal be any different? It's sometimes pointless and dumb to write every song about random evil crap like Slayer just to prove how much of a "tough guy" you are. Everyone has feelings. Some people want to express them. Deal with it.
So, now that that's out of the way, once again, I'll agree with most of you that some nu-metal out there is definitely a false type of metal that's made just for money or mass appeal. These bands should be burned alive along with their music collections if they won't learn to make real music. But you should also know that some nu-metal out there can be really good. Don't just hate a whole genre to be "rebellious" and "different."
nu-metal hater #1: Man all nu-metal sucks! It's a bunch of guys with no instrumental talent making songs about their feelings that nobody cares about!! You should listen to REAL metal like (insert 80s bands here) because they make songs about Satan and play a billion notes per second!!

Nu metal - what is it?
A genre of music that incorporates hiphop, decks and digital sound to metal music. Not to be confused with thrash or industrial, NuMetal bands tend to be more commercial than their underground counterparts and attract a certain subculture too.

What does "Nu metal" mean?
A form of false metal that emerged from the mainstream and into the CD players of trendy kids everywhere during the mid nineties. Contrary to the name, Nu metal is not and has no relation to metal music. The term "Nu metal" was given to the genre by the likes of MTV who are 100% clueless to anything having to do with metal.
The componenets of a new metal band are as follows:
1. Guitarists who cannot play at all and literally just picked up the instrument. They play very downtuned guitars and 90% of the time they make "riffs" using an open string and the first fret. Occasionally they might use the 3rd or 4th fret but rarley does this happen.
2. The vocalists usually raps or "screams" like a little bitch. The lyrics tend to be about teen angst, wanting to die, cutting yourself, being a loser, hating your parents or simply just being a faggot. At no time whatsoever is any manliness or dignity permitted in nu metal lyrics.
3. The drummers are completely talentless.
4. They dress like transvestites, goth fags, with body paint or wear masks. At no point can the nu metal attire be in any way intimidating. You typical nu metal band consists of five members none of which look as though they could bench press more than 70 lbs. They must look sad, emo and depressed in pictures or make a sad attempt at looking angry. At all times they must look hilarious.
Examples of Nu metal bands are as follows: Korn, System of a down, POD, Linkin park, Limp bizkit, 40 below summer, Coal chamber, Taproot, Soil, Murderdolls, Mudvayne, Papa roach, Mushroomhead and Adema.
Contrary to the belief of posers and trendwhores, Nu metal bands are not and have nothing to do with metalcore bands like Lamb of god, Shadows fall and Unearth. There is not one similarity between nu metal and metalcore considering that metalcore takes a ton of talent, do not look like faggots and actually have manly or intelligent lyrics regarding violence, drinking, politics and hatred. The popularity of Nu metal has dwindled in recent times as the tougher, less emo and far more talented genre of metalcore has taken it's place. Many nu metal fans have become angered at the rise of bands who do not write songs about killing themselves and hating their parents. Ironically enough, the insult most freqently used by these trendslaves is to call metalcore "emo" in a hilarious attempt to degrade the genre. This is 100% untrue as metalcore bands write lyrics along the same lines as death metal and thrash metal and not a single metalcore song ever written has had anything to do with wanting to die, cutting your wrists etc. The hilarious hypocrisy in this is that while the metalcore bands have lyrics that are as far from emo as possible, nu metal bads have the most emo lyircs ever and fans of ANY nu metal bands are in no postion to make fun of anything emo, trendy or talentless since their beloved genre is in fact all 3 of those things in extreme degress.
Your typical Nu metal fan will dress like an actual metalhead with long hair, black clothes, peircings, tattoos, facial hair etc. Although they are not and have nothing to do with metal they will either a) Claim to be metalhead even though they are not thus making them a poser.
or
b) Claim not to be a metalhead even thought they dress like one making them an EXTREME poser.
Both of these frustrate actual metalheads since their inhehrent badassness is being portrayed wrongly by emo kids in disguise. Hating Nu metal and its fans are one of the biggest parts of being an actual metalhead and no metalhead would touch a Nu metal band with a ten foot stick. One exception to this rule is the band Slipknot. Slipknot is in fact the one Nu metal band that takes influence from real metal and incorporates it into the genre thus making it appealing to metalheads and poser emo nu metal kids alike. Slipknot is also disliked by many nu metal fans because of the actual metal influence thus proving how much of pussies Nu metal fans actaully are.
Surveys and studies have been done that show that Nu metal fans are signifigantly less intelligent than average people. The studies show that they rival listeners of mainstream rap which is why many Nu metal listeners tend to like rap/techno artists like ICP, Nelly, Mindless self indulgence etc. over the actual intelligent talented rappers like Immortal technique and DZK. Nu metal fans are as dumb as they come.
Nu metal is trendy, emo and talentless. Don't be a Nu metal fan!

The Nu Metal label is slapped onto almost every band that was created after the late '90's or any metal band that becomes mainstream.
Many people say nu metal isn't real metal and that it's shit. Well guess what? By many people's definition, Metallica is nu metal. They're probably the most heard of and mainstream metal band in the world. I'm pretty sure Metallica isn't shit, both metal heads and nu metal fans can agree on that. Metallica is one of the best metal bands.
A lot of nu metal is good. Just because something is mainstream means it's bad. Get over yourselves.
Slipknot, KORN, Disturbed, etc. are all considered "nu metal"
By many people's definitions, Metallica is nu metal. And since many people are saying nu metal sucks, they're saying Metallica sucks, which they certainly do not.

The new wave of musicians who grew up listening to 70's and 80's metal. The new metal bands have thir roots in old metal but use other techniques to produce a new sound. for example many nu metal bands use sampling, rap-like lyrics,low pitch, the list goes on and its diffrent for each nu metal band.
Nu metal had sucess in the late 90's (even thought it existed as early as 1991) but now people have turned on nu metal and it has fallen out of favor.
Many fans of the old metal cant accept the evolution of their genre. People also dont like nu metal because it was used as just another fad and once a fad is over everyone hates it.
But nu metal lives on. Thier are only th loyalest fans left and we wont stop listening to what we like to listen to because you dont like it.
their are many nu metal bands but the best and most popular are: Korn, slipknot,Limp Bizkit, P.O.D., System of a Down, Linkin Park, Disturbed, Powerman 5000, Rage Aginst the Machine, and Godsmack. (yes Godsmack they aren't old metal). Their are many more.

Weirldly enough, this "music" shares alot of simularies to 70s/80sglam rock and hair metal:
- They are completely mainstream. It takes barely any challenge at all to hit the Billboard. They both use their lack of real talent to
- Annoying vocals. Glam had the ear-spliting torture of yelling and the mediocrity of singing sorrowfully from feminine men while nu metal "artists" do a horrible impression of rapping or use the same method of screaming like their 80s counterpart.
- Lyrics are as deep and complex as a horizontal line. Rather than explaining, listen and find out yourself on how fucking weak the lyrics are- no real meaning, no real work, no real depth; just used to get shitloads of cash and women.
- Completely hated by metal fans so it'll stay far and away from their scene. (Indie Artist for the win!!!)
- They are both fads, FADS. It's just happens that glam was like a nucleur radiation-sensitive bug while nu metal is big, fucking cockroach.
The only contrasts are that:
- Glam/Hair = sex and love; Nu = angst and pity
- Glam/Hair = transvestitial men; Nu = metal noobies and wannabe rappers
- Glam/Hair = making their names to look cute; Nu = misspelling their names in order to look cool
FUCK nu metal and their marketing scheme, why give away money on a highly taled about yet a shitty album so it can be shoved up into the asses of MTV, RIAA and that said nu metal "band"?

the genre where it seems that all new bands playing heavier forms of music gets thrown into. nu metal is metal with a bit of rap in it and maybe elements of other genres. limp bizkit and linkin park beeing two examples. slipknot, is NOT nu metal. slipknot only has tiiiiny elements of rap and they have scratching. but they also have enormously many elements of other sub-genres within metal. industrial, death etc... and for those of you saying nu metal sucks because it's commercialistic and crap, and then go on saying tha cradle of filth and dimmu borgir are real metal, well fuck you! dimmu and cradle are the most commercialist bands within the black metal genre. maybe not the old stuff but very much the new shit... maybe not easy for people in the US to know but if you live in like norway you know if you're a fan of metal. dimmu even had a commercial on tv..bwah..

Nu metal is a fake term invented by music critics who have slapped it upon every modern rock band since 1996. It is not an existing genre. Stop complaining about how nu metal supposedly sucks when the genre doesn't actually exist.
Bands slapped with the "Nu metal" label actually perform in a variety of different genres from hardcore punk, alternative rock, funk metal, rap rock, alternative metal, experimental metal, experimental rock, funk rock and hip-hop. Use these terms to describe these bands.
Body Count = Thrash metal
Korn = Alternative rock / Hard rock
Faith No More = Experimental rock
Fantomas = Experimental metal
Hed PE = Punk rock / rap rock
Limp Bizkit = Crap (but generally considered rap-rock/alternative rock)
Linkin Park = Alternative rock / rap rock (personally, I think this one is crap also)
Mr. Bungle = Experimental rock
Nirvana = Grunge
Primus = Funk metal
Rammstein = Industrial metal
Slipknot = Alternative metal
Snot = Funk metal / hardcore punk
System of a Down = Alternative metal

The direct result of Metal getting completely blasted at a bar one night and screwing Emo in the back alley, then allowing the resulting child to be raised by an angsty teenage girl.

Person 2: What are you, nuts? That stuff sucks. Let's put on some Nirvana, instead. It's angsty but still has feeling and melody. Plus it's introspective and brings up interesting points about mortality and humanity in general. And it's not a load of commercialized crap.
