A genre of music witch was brought in the 1990's. The music consisted of a mix between rock and rap.

Nu-Metal - what is it?
Nu-Metal (also called neo-metal, aggro-rock) is a subgenre of heavy metal. It evolved from alternative metal and eventually became it's own subgenre in the mid to late 90s. It includes many artists such as Korn, Slipknot and Disturbed in their first work, The Sickness (although, David Draiman has stated in an interview he felt it sounded more like reggae metal, similar to Skindred.) and lesser known bands such as Coal Chamber, Flaw and Sevendust. The genre itself receives unwarranted and unneeded bashing and criticism from say, thrashers and brutal death metalers, and then again from whiny teen fags that listen to one direction or whatever. They seem to forget that these artists were pioneers that came up with a new musical genre. What have your artists done? Recreated something done how many times? Nu-Metal is an excellent example of vocal and instrumental talent (excluding fred durst. He has no perceivable talent of which to speak, coming from a true nu-metal fan.) Its quite fun to listen to and it doesn't deserve the bashing and wrinkling of noses whenever its name is mentioned. I can guarantee that when you were you an angsty teen, you had a korn poster in your bedroom, or a copy of the slipknot debut in your room. The whole musical world respect Korn For ushering in a completely new genre, me personally, I think that that's worth something.

What does "Nu-Metal" mean?
It's time to set some things straight about Nu-metal, like what IS nu metal and what is not. First off, Nickelback and Three Doors Down are MUCH more like rock bands, not metal. Granted they suck, but they're not metal in the least, either lyrically or in theme. This is important because calling bands like them "nu-metal" gives nu-metal an even worse name than it already has.
I also notice that a lot of people here are jumping to the defense of System of a Down and I must say I agree. SOAD is the only "nu-metal" band that really stands out in the category. System's songs and lyrics have some cool themes much like early Metallica (no, I'm not saying they sound very much alike but the themes of the songs are similar) unlike the emotionally insecure screaming of Slipknot (they have 4 more members than they need and Cory can't sing for his life), Linkin Park (Chester sounds like he has a vibrator stuck in his larnyx) and of course that poser Fred Durst. SOAD's songs are also quite catchy 99% non-depressing, they'll even make you laugh sometimes. It is for this reason that I find it hard to actually call them nu metal. Maybe Alternative Metal would be better for SOAD. Besides, does their lead singer Serj sound much like your typical screaming nu metal frontman?
Overall, nu metal is like any other musical genre, with good bands and bad ones to match. Good nu metal bands include SOAD, Atreyu, Disturbed, Ill Nino, and some KoRn. Bad ones include poppy bands such as Linkin Park, Slipknot, POD, Limp Bizkit, some KoRn, Puddle of Mudd, and Drowning Pool.
Why diss nu-metal when you could be dissing rap instead?

nu-metal might not have the best lyrics or instrumentals, but it is still one of the best forms of music out there.

A genre of accelerated alternative rock that takes influence from such well known metal acts as Pantera, Metallica Slayer, Anthrax, etc. as well as groove, rap, hip hop or even industrial music. These bands are often lumped in with metalcore bands because they are both mainstream and both utilize playing styles such as using breakdowns.

A genre of shit that claims to be related to real metal. Lyrics usually consist of whines, problems, and bitching. Most Metal Heads found Nu-Metal first and then branched off after discovering genious bands such as Opeth. Yet some claim that this horrid sound is "Heavy" or actually real "Metal", and stay with it. Nu-Metal is the most known type of metal, because its made for teens trying to get attention...Bands such as: Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Adema are common nu-metal bnds. You can recognize Nu-Metal by whiney vocals (with rap/hip hop rythms), sound effects to cover the simple guitar riffs, and really slow drumming. If you listen to Nu-Metal and wish to change your ways, Explore Death Metal. It's much better, and you'll finally know real music.

This is NOT a subgenre of metal/heavy metal. Its a subgenre of alternative metal (an "umbrella" term to be honest).
Nu-metal evolved from hard rock and hardcore punk, NOT from metal, but gained influence from metal (hence the name).
Nu-metal is NOT "boybands of metal" because it is NOT metal. Many metalheads hate the genre because it rips off metal, but it does not, as it is NOT metal, it is a different genre altogether.
Nu-Metal is diverse. Pioneering artists such as Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit do not all sound the same. Many bands appearing from the hard rock/post grunge movement adopted a nu-metal edge (e.g. disturbed, drowning pool) due to influences from the genre.
UD entries such as Nu-Metal: "shite" are not actually definitions, they are opinions from disrespectful people.
Nu-Metal
Nu-Metal is a hybrid genre.
It combines the heavy rock genre 'metal' with different singing styles ie rapping. A perfect example of the is 'The Truth' by Limp Bizkit. Another good example is 'Spit It Out' by Slipknot. Within these bands there is also a m'ixer' who will provide sounds that cannot be created using convential instruments. Within the convential instruments guitars are often tuned down to give 'heavier' riffs. to compliment this the drummers will use the bass drum more often (and will usually have two bas drum pedels)
Pre-Nu-Metalers often look at the new genre with disregard as it is not ture rock music.
Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and Perfect Circle are all examples of Nu-Metal music.
