What is Dole?
Municipal or state social assistance, specifically welfare. Not to be confused with employment benefits, or "pogey".
People on the dole are so poor they can't even afford to pay attention.

What does "Dole" mean?
In England, someone who is receiving state welfare, often for long periods of time, even when they could work.
"What's he doing now then?"
"Oh, he's on the dole, while his girlfriend works in social services"
"Sad bastard!"
Dole - what does it mean?
D.O.L.E acronym for Department Of Labour and Employment. unemployment benefit in the UK from 1911 until 2001 when dwp took over and called it job seekers allowance and now universal credit
my granddad was on the D.O.L.E claiming fortnightly giros after the mines shut down. i finished college, couldn't get a job and now i get Universal credit but everyone still calls it "the dole"
Dole - meaning
Unemployment insurance; or, less commonly, any form of public assistance.
Since the company he worked for went out of business and he did not quit or get fired, he was eligible to go on the dole.
