What is sopranos?
The highest female voice type, highest choir part. The soprano section of a choir may often be divided into Soprano I and Soprano II, each singing different parts when the soprano music breaks off into two sections.
A woman or pre-pubescent boy who possesses such a voice.
All the other sopranos in my choir decided to ditch class on the same day, and I ended up having to hit that damn high A by myself.

What does "sopranos" mean?
The high female singing voice in opera, choir, and music in general, with a singing range from C4 (middle C) to D6 (D over a woman's high C) just over two octaves above.
Situated over the mezzo-soprano (who often plays her rival), the soprano usually plays the female lead in opera and musical theater, usually the heroine.
Many pop and broadway singers are sopranos, although the vocal subcategories used in opera are not applied to them. Examples include Amy Adams, Sarah Brightman, Julie Andrews, Allison Crowe, Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton, Jayma Mays, Charlotte Church, Mariah Carey, Minnie Riperton, Floor Jansen and Kristin Chenoweth.
According to vocal weight/voice type and range, sopranos are usually divided into five different categories:
Soubrette: usually a beginner whose voice is developing, a light voice with less strength in extreme high and low notes, she plays flirtatious and sassy but sweet comical characters.
Coloratura: a flexible, flute-like voice with a very high range, she performs vocal acrobatics. Examples include Sumi Jo, Natalie Dessay, and Beverly Sills
Lyric soprano: A strong, sweet, lightweight voice usually reserved for the ingenue and other likable characters. Examples include Renee Fleming, Tarja Turunen, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Mirella Freni.
Spinto soprano: A lyric voice with a strong dramatic edge, a bridge between lyric and dramatic. Examples include Leontyne Price, Renata Tebaldi, and Roxana Briban.
Dramatic soprano: A powerful, emotive, edgy voice which is suited to bold, desperate, tragic heroines. Examples include Maria Callas, Floor Jansen, Karita Mattila and Deborah Voigt.

The highest female voicing within choral music. Usually the bearer of melody.
The sopranos in the choir sang the the melody to all of the carols while the rest of the choir sang the countermelody.

A HBO series based on the New Jersey based DeCavalcante crime family. A crime family that was always looked down upon by the five families from New York.
One day FBI agents were listening to a tap on some DeCavalcante soldiers and they started talking about the sopranos, talking about if its about them and how good of a show it is.
Sopranos - definition
An HBO TV series that focuses on Mafia chieftain Tony Soprano's blood and mob family. Amazing acting, great writing and stories. It's still my favorite TV show and always will. The show is notorious for it's abrasive use of profanity, shocking violence and nudity/sexuality. Certainly not for kids under the age of 17.
I love The Sopranos! Can't wait for season 6, which airs in early 2006. Quite a wait. I take it that the crew is on hiatus.

A popular telivision mafia family found in a show of the same name on HBO. The core consists of
Tony, a large, level headed mob boss.
Carmela, the somewhat and rightly disgruntled spouse of Tony.
Meadow, the politically leftist but bright daughter.
A.J., the spitting image of Tony without all the redeeming qualities (an asshole).
Who gives a damn if Sex and the City is gone- we still have the fuckin' Sopranos!
