Boaked - what is it?

The Scotland/Northern Ireland idiom for gagging without vomiting.

NOTE: The idiom is *the* dry boak. It it never *a* dry boak.

It is from this idiom that the word boak escaped to take on a life of its own (along with the alternate spelling boke) -- with some people using boak (or boke) to mean "the dry boak," and others meaning normal vomiting.

"It would huv gied ye the dry boak tae hear them sookin up tae him, aw sweetie sweetie." (Anne Donovan, Hieroglyphics: And Other Stories, 2001)

Boaked - slang

An alternative past tense to the verb to bike. The word biked sounds awkward in some sentences so "boake" was created to replace biked in these particular situations. There are other words similar to this in the english language, for example run and ran; one does not say runned when talking about how far or long they ran. This word boake would be pronounced with a long o (the oake sounding like oak, as in the tree.)

I boake 5 miles to the store and back.

Boaked

From boak (Scotland/Northern Ireland) retching OR vomiting.

Note that vomiting is, duh, with vomiting (wet), and retching is without vomiting (dry), and the word boaking can mean either.

NOTE: For the non-"ing" form, boak, there is an explicit retching phrase: the dry boak (which is a noun).

Like many "ing" forms of verbs, boaking can be used as an adjective: the boaking bridesmaid, the boaking jerkwad who drank all my good scotch, etc.

"The ones not commenting on it were only refraining because they had their heads over the sides, boaking for all they were worth."

"I pull some Kleenex out from my jacket pocket. I always keep them handy for wiping purposes as you never know when some tight arsed cunt at HQ supplies will run short. I hand the boaking mess a couple. -- There you go mate."
