When you fart but you are unsure if it stinks or not, so you back up several feet to determine it's level of toxicity .
Richard was unsure as to how bad his fart was, so he began backdrafting into it. Turns out it was one of those farts that could eat the stitching out of Levi's.

Eventually this sensation seems to "burn itself out," like a real fire deprived of oxygen. However, also similar to real fire, when you raise your head and open a passage for air, the burning "flares up," like real backdraft.
