Definder - what does the word mean?

What is Take the L?

When you take your first love for granted up until the point that she cheats on you, hides it from you, and leaves you, never to return, leaving you with true heartbreak and nothing but regret, because you know you *fucked* up....

Jack: I made a big mistake, man... I didn't appreciate her enough and she blocked all forms of contact. She dumped me, man... I can't believe how much of a fuck-up loser I am. I feel like I'm living in a nightmare.

Stephen: That's terrible, dude. I've been there. But you know what? Sometimes in life, you just gotta take the L. Sorry to say it.

What does "Take the L" mean?

Taking the L does not, as some people think, mean to suffer a humiliating defeat.

What it actually means is to accept a loss gracefully. To understand that losses will be inevitable in life, learn what you can from the experience, and shake hands with your opponent. To resign with self respect instead of delaying the inevitable and embarrassing yourself.

Some people simply cannot do this and will begin to act extremely immature when it's clear they're losing.

I could tell that Steve was going to hook up with Julia instead of me, so I had to take the L. It's not a big deal and I have other options.

Take the L - what does it mean?

Originally taken from the iconic Chicago Cubs 'Win' and 'Loss' flags for almost 80 years, since 1937. Since the Cubs had such a great (2016) season from the start, and most people bet on them winning, cubs fans were making a "meme" out of the L flags to mean "take a loss". However, no other team in the league uses these flags, they just use their phones...
