What does "Amherst" mean?
Formerly the Sandstone Capital off the world, Amherst, Ohio is the home of the Amherst Comets. Like many sprawling suburban communities, Amherst, Ohio continues to be transformed into a safe, growing, commercial, residential community that still has a great small town feel near the central business district. Where else but in a small, quaint suburban community can you still shop at a Ben Franklin's five & dime, buy a small pet at Neptune's Cellar, have dinner at Ziggys, Angelo's, Hot Dog Heaven, the list goes on.... Oh, and don't forget the close proximity to several of Lorain County's MetroParks including Mill Hollow where there is a place to stop and see where the Underground Railroad passed through and the annual Potato Festival... great place to live, work, or visit.

Amherst - what does it mean?
A Massachusetts public institution of higher learning located in the middle of nowhere aka Amherst, Massachusetts. The location leads to the insane amount of partying that occurs, since there is nothing better to do. For the academic year of 2005-2006, UMass Amherst (Also known as Zoomass or Zoomass-Slamherst) was rated by the Princeton Review as the #9 party school in the country. ABC also rated it the most violent campus in the nation, but this was based on skewed numbers and outdated facts. UMass is home to Sylvan Residence Area, rated as one of the most sexually active campus residences in the country. Despite this, and noted Sylvanites such as Frank Black of the Pixies, Sylvan tends to be the last choice for residence for all incoming and current students due to its distance from the parties and campus center. UMass is home to world-reknowned Polymer studies and Linguistics programs, and the Isenberg School of Management rates among many Ivy League business schools as the best in the country. The most popular majors are Biological and Physical Sciences, Communications, and Psychology. It has an undergraduate enrollment of over 18,000 and is growing larger by the year.

The Zoo is a large city located in the center of a small town known to society as Amherst, Mass. This town would not other wise be known if it wasn't for the school. UMass Amherst is a place in which New Amsterdam may be rivaled in terms of the amount of ganja that circulates through the campus, especially in Central. Kids pregame harder than most kids party and parties are bigger on a Monday night than they would be at any other school on any given Friday or Saturday night. This is the 7th party school in the nation and the most violent. Our pride for the Red Sox is so strong that we are willing to flip over cars to demonstrate the love we have for our team and our alcohol consumption may lead to problems later in life. But hell, we're young.

A small, self-professed liberal town in Western Massachusetts. Amherst has a population of about 35,000 and a median age of 21.8, thanks to UMass, Amherst College, and Hampshire College. A town that prides itself on believing strongly in diversity, 76.7% of the population is white, with only 6.2% hispanic and 5.1% Black. The government is a town meeting with select board members, which are overwhelmingly white.
The residents and parents in Amherst are so concerned about political correctness that they petitioned to prevent the high school from performing West Side Story, because the play portrayed Puerto Rico and hispanics in a negative light. Instead, the high school put on a production of Guys and Dolls, which is one of the most sexist musicals ever written.
If you attend a choral performance in Amherst, each of the following will probably be on the bill:
-at least one song from Africa
-at least one song in a different language, probably more than that, probably one in Yiddish (most of the performers will have no clue what they are singing)
-at least one song about loving each other and/or peace, and will most likely be related to diversity
-none of the songs will be overtly christian, in order to include everyone
Amherst once had a MaDonald's, but it went out of business, in part because it was next to Antonio's (which sells pizza by the slice until about 1:30am, with ANYTHING you could ever think of for a topping).
Amherst is a suburb of itself. Leave the city limits, and you find yourself surrounded by cornfields, cow farms, and tiny hill towns.
