Orginating from prison culture in the south, "Warden", was shorten to "war-day". Used to signify friend as well show respect.

Younger or smaller person. Often used to address someone you know to be younger than yourself. Also used in street pseudo-hierarchy, to address someone of lower status, regardless of age or size.
Not gender specific, but most commonly directed at boys and young men.

Others theorize that the term may be a corruption of "wardie", i. e. someone who comes from the same ward or neighborhood of New Orleans. Possibly spread to other regions of the country through rap music.
