Trekker - what is it?
A person who appreciates the entertainment value of Star Trek and/or one of its many incarnations and:
1) Understands the difference between reality and the crap on the tube be it 'Star Trek', 'The Simple Life' or 'Jerry Springer'.
2) Does NOT dress up as a ST character for Halloween or any other occassion ( but may wear a Nixon or Clinton mask for giggles and grins when drinking ).
3) Does NOT live in mommies basement. (attic, or crawl-space under the stairs).
4) Has had real, live, in-person sexual relations with another living, breathing human being.
5) Would rather sleep with Elisha Cuthbert than Seven-of-Nine.
Leonard Nimoy is not a trekker.
What does "trekker" mean?
A trekker puts on a backpack, and hikes. A star trek trekker doesn't. His favourite song is 'where no man has gone before.' Sounds like a feminist movement song. He prefers alien culture (Vulcan and Klingon) to his own. And he believes the star trek tv show is 'real.' Neil Armstrong made it to the moon. Zefram Cochrane didn't. Neither did William Shatner. William Shatner is an actor, not a astronaut. Like the other actors get paid to appear at conventions. Trekkers don't like Trekkies, because they're too hardcore. A Trekkie will ask how big are those photon torpodoes? They're 4 foot long and made of wood, an actor replied.
'You speak Klingon, well for a terran.'
'Yes,' said the trekkers.

A noun, trekkers are originally fans of the TV show Star Trek: the Next Generation, and used the term 'trekker' to differentiate themselves from the original star trek fans who called themselves 'trekkies' Trekker has now come to mean a Trekkie who doesn't understand that they're a trekkie. Within the star trek community, there is still a debate over the difference between trekkies and trekkers, but the only difference is that trekkies came first, and trekkers don't like the term 'trekkie'.

Trekker
A fan of any iteration of Star Trek, not just the Next Generation as elsewhere noted.
Original series Star Trek fans have had a preference for trekker, not trekkie, going back to the early '70s and the first conventions.
At about that time, the mainstream media discovered Star Trek fandom with feature stories that usually had a condescending spin, including the term trekkie. These were along the lines of "Who are these trekkies and why do they gather by the thousands to profess their love for an old canceled TV show?"
Those features often focused on the most extreme aspects of fandom that of course looked weirdest to non-fans, and didn't delve into what it was about the show that made fans so passionate. Thus were the beginnings of the "nerdy" cliches that have come to be associated with fans. It was to avoid associations with such cliches that original Star Trek fans became opposed to trekkie and sought to get the more serious-sounding term trekker used.
