What does "the city" mean?
1) what people call the big city closest to them
2) what people who live out in the country call any large town

"the city" is used by anyone who lives around Chicago to refer to it. If you say "I'm going into Chicago" people will look at you wierd.

Manhattan, but there is an increasing tendency among the younger generation of New Yorkers to refer to all five boroughs as "the city."
No you dumb Long Island fuck, the city starts at 1st Avenue, not Lakeville Road.

The City refers to Manhattan OR the five boroughs. If you live in the boroughs, then 'The City' is definately Manhattan. Outside of the boroughs, it can mean the boroughs as a whole or just Manhattan.
Remember: New York City isn't just Manhatten, it's the whole five boroughs (Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan).

An urban area with entertainment and a downtown. Different place depending on where youl ive, if you live in NY or NJ the city means Manhttan, if you live in the Bay Area it means San Fran or Oakland. If you live in Illinois you'd prolly call Chicago the city.
