_The Residents_ are an _American_ art collective best known for their avant-garde music and multimedia works. Since their first official release, Meet the Residents, the group has released over sixty albums, numerous _music_ videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, and ten DVDs. Throughout the group's existence, the individual members have ostensibly attempted to operate under anonymity, preferring instead to have attention focused on their art _output_. Much outside speculation and rumor has focused on this aspect of the group. In public, the group appears silent and costumed, often wearing _eyeball_ helmets, top hats and tailsβa long-lasting costume now recognized as its signature iconography. In 2017, Hardy Fox, long known to be associated with the Residents, identified himself as the band's co-founder and primary composer; he died in 2018.

An avant-garde band that started in the 70s and continues to record and tour today. They keep their identities secret by wearing masks onstage and in all their publicity, and have never released their names to the public. The main elements of the Residents' music are the highly experimental instrumentation and production, distorted vocals, heavy repetition and a favoring of weirdness over displaying any actual musical talent, of which they may very well have none.

In 1971, the group sent their album "The Warner Bros. Album" to Harve Halverstadt at Warner Bros. He didn't enjoy it too much and sent it back, but becuase the band did not include a name, he sent it back to "Residents", and they adopted it as their name.
The Residents have been around for a long time and have produced many albums. They are a great band that focus on being artistic and experimenting with new technology.

βThere are a lotta cats that just want to get in there and they roll with the homies. And they really donβt want to be a part of nuthinβ. They ainβt from no neighborhood.
