What does "oys" mean?

When anything dramatic, funny, scandalous etc occurs, one must shout "Oi oi oi oi" to aware the general public about the event occurring. It can also be used as a form of greeting to a friend or colleague. There are different spelling variations such as: "Oye" or "Oui".
