What is first gear?
The best kind of traffic jam. This is when the speed of the traffic moves at the same rate as a car with a manual transmission when idling in first gear. This saves the driver the need for any clutch work, or indeed any pedal work at all.
Passenger: Dude, I hate traffic!
Driver: Yeah, but I'm just letting the car roll along by itself. Just enjoying the first gear cruise baby!
Passenger: That as the case may be, we are still going to be late...

When something just isn't performing as planned.
"Sex with my girlfriend was really bad last night. It seemed like she was stuck in first gear."
"The internet is slow today, must be stuck in first gear."
"I feel like I'm stuck in first gear today... better crank on the gnar-gnar!"
What does "first gear" mean?
adjective: a lazy, drifting shuffle, usually performed by directionless, lower class people who have total lack of ambition and an oblivious disregard for people in a hurry. Commonly seen in parking lots, busy intersections, and Wal-Mart.
"Can you believe the crackhead driving that hoopty snatched my parking space 'cause those biatches was strolling across the lot in first gear?"
"Dayam!! I'll never make this light with those losers crossing the street in first gear. Get a fucking job!"
