What is James Potter?
James Potter was one of the ringleaders of the Marauders, who spent the majoraty of his Hogwarts Years either pulling pranks with his mates Sirius "Padfoot" Black, Remus "Moony" Lupin, and Peter "Wormtail" Pettigrew, or unsuccessfully (until his seventh year) attempting to woe one Lily Evans.
Also known as "Prongs" due to his animagus form of a stag.
Father of Harry Potter.
Was somewhat cruel to one Severus Snape during his school years, and had a habit of messing up his hair (usually when Lily was around) to make it look windswept.
Was a member of the Order of the Phoenix, an anti-Voldemort action group.
Died October 31 1981 defending his wife Lily Evans Potter and son Harry James Potter from the Dark Lord Voldemort.

What does "James Potter" mean?
Severus Snape's secret lover. Always has been, always will be. What Snape didn't want to show Harry in the penseive was that Snape had fallen in love with James when James saved Severus from Lupin. Then Lily found out about their love and was jealous so she pretended to like James so Snape would come back to his senses. Snape felt weirded out to talk to James anymore, being always taught that it was wrong to love another man and he did not want to hurt his freind Lily. James was confused by Snape's actions, which led him to curse Snape in front of his freinds. One reason was he felt hurt that Snape was snubbing him, second because he did not want his freinds to realize he was gay. Snape, hurt and confused, refused to speak to James ever again. Snape did not save Harry for Lily, but for James. The End.

James Potter was an incredibly talented, good-looking, brave and most importantly, GOOD person. He and Snape shared a Malfoy/Harry relationship; Jo HAS confirmed that James wasn't bullying him. Snape got back at him a lot. James hated and was disgusted by Snape's Dark Arts infatuation (much like Harry at Draco) and this was his unconscious reason for troubling him. He had a huge, HUGE crush on Lily Evans, his pretty fellow Gryffindor with red hair and green eyes. She used to despise him for how he behaved with Snape but also secretly admired him for his bravely and loyalty, one example being when he saved Snape's life down at the Whomping Willow without a concern for his own. His crush eventually grew out into love, and she agreed, after years of him asking her out, to go out with him. She fell in love with him too, and Snape hated James for that. But please let us not forget that SNAPE was the reason they got killed in the first place and James died out of love for Lily and his son Harry. James used to be proud and arrogant but he grew out of it. Snape remained a bully. So, overall, 'James Potter' can be used as a definition of 'extremely-and-absolutely-charming-amazing-and-handsome-brave-person' and also for someone following the object of his affections who doesn't like him back. Well, not YET! ;)
Take my advice, Mark, and don't go pulling a James Potter on Sophia. She really does NOT like you, whatever you may think

However, she hated him until she finnally agreed to go out with him in their seventh year. They got married soon afterward, and had Harry Potter (a.k.a. the-Boy-Who-Lived, the-Chosen-One).
James Potter was no doubt one of the bravest people in the Harry Potter series, as he died for his family without a second part. He was popular and had many friends and admireres, was very good at magic, and an excellent athlete.

In his Hogwarts years he was close friends with Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew also known as 'The Marauders', creators of the Marauders Map. In his 5th year at Hogwarts he, Sirius and Peter learned how to become animagus (very advanced magic) in order to accompany Remus on the night of the full moon when he transformed into a werewolf. Potter took the form of a large stag and aquired the nickname 'Prongs' while the others aquired diffrent nicknames to fit their animal of transformation; Sirius became Padfoot, Remus became Moony and Peter became Wormtail.
While in school he was a CHASER not a seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch Team and was a known trouble maker who enjoyed picking on a slytherin by the name of Severus Snape who they later dubbed Snivellus and Trying to make passes on classmate Lily Evan who until their 7th year at Hogwarts ignored and disliked James. Potter also had a habbit of messing up his already messy hair to give it that 'just-off-the-brook look'
He ended up marrying his red-headed classmate Lily Evans and together they had a son, Harry James Potter. James appointed his best friend, Sirius Black, yong Harry's godfather.
James (who was other wise un-employed) and Lily were both active members of the Firts Order of the Pheonix so naturally they were prime targets for Voldemort so they went into hiding. After preforming a Fedilus Charm on their home in Godrics Hallow they appointed Sirius Black their secret keeper but at the last moment Black suggested they use Peter as secret keeper because Voldemort would never expect it. So under Black's advice Peter became secret keeper, little did the Potters know Pettigrew was working for Voldemort so no more than a week after the charm was cast Pettigrew sold out the Potter's. On Halloween(1981)night when Harry was but one Voldemort invaded the hidden home and killed both elder Potters. James died trying to protect his wife and son.
Poor chap pulled a James Potter. He died for his family.
