Definder - what does the word mean?

What is ESL?

A "job" that many grifters, low-lifes, simpletons and garden variety retards do while living abroad as an expat. Many, if not all, of those that are currently teaching ESL have failed astronomically in their home country. This includes financially owning themselves by getting one of the many useless degrees offered by today's university. An incompetence to use any job-hunting website. It also includes burning a variety of bridges with all of their friends, associates and family members. And finally, it includes a general sense of running from all responsibility due to a severe case of arrested development.

Ironically, many of their students, ESL Speakers, are trying to have a better life, work hard and take life head on.

Blue-haired coffee shop barista: I double majored in English Creative Writing with an emphasis on poetry, and general Philosophy, and I've had it. I've been working here for 6 long years. Too long, too long. Next week, I'm moving for an ESL Teaching job abroad for $800/month. It's GOOD money, and allows me to save each month to pay off my $120,000 of student debt.

Engineer, former friend: That's great.

ESL - what is it?

The change in speech that happens (sometimes unconsciously) when an EFL speaker is talking to an ESL speaker. The EFL speaks louder & slower, uses clearer syllables and sometimes adopts the accent of their ESL audience.

Useful when ordering Chinese or Indian takeaway over the phone so it is more easily understood.

Has no racist motivations at all but is simply a practical way to assist communication.

EFL: "I have one beef-a-black-been, laaj spesha frai raice, tree dim sim."

ESL: "Ok, be ten fitteen minnas. Ba Bai."

Friend-of-EFL: "Dude, that was some nice ESL speak."

ESL: "Tayn-you. Mehbe I shudda orda sam sprin roos a well."

Friend-of-ESL: "OK you can stop now you friggin racist."

ESL - what does it mean?

Everyone Surely Loses Everything. A term often used to threaten a lower-class individual, such as a man speaking to a woman. The term "everyone" is typically implied to mean everyone within the given group being spoken to.

Okay. 7, conference room, be there or esle..

ESL

Short for "English as Second Language", the term actually refers to *people* who use english as their second language. These people are often falsely thought of as morons, or generally a person of lower degree/intelligence. They often use their own version of English, mixing in some of their own words or their first language's grammar, especially when talking to other ESL, even more so when the other ESL's first language is the same as his own (when they are speaking English to each other for whatever weird reason, that is.)
Generally ESLs can understand English decently, especially when an ESL version is spoken by another ESL. Their first languages needn't be the same, but it would help even more.
Between the english-speaking community, however, it has a derogatory meaning.

Between 2 English-speaking persons (an arrogant one apparently) :
Damn, i got an ESL in my group. This is gonna suck...
Zip it, you'll be lucky if you contributed half as much as him, assuming he knows what's expected of him.
