What is DRM?Digital Right Management. The result of an increasing, if not unfounded, fear in a digital age of media piracy and how it could ruin the music and gaming industries. It's basically anything which prevents you, the consumer, from pirating digital content. For example, if you try tampering with your Xbox 360 to play pirated games then the guys down at Microsoft know what you're doing and can shut the console off permanently. Some forms work well and are met with general approval (iTunes, Steam) and others not so much (SecuROM). Steam and iTunes are examples of DRM done properly. SecuROM is not (see sneaky shit). DRM - meme gifDRM - videoDRM - what is it?The reason why piracy still exists. Even if the user buys a DRM protected game/DVD/CD legally, they will still suffer a fate worse than Hell. Some forms of DRM, such as SecuROM (commonly mocked as Suck-uROM) will force the user to re-register if any component of their computer is changed or weekly, some require you to be online while the game is running (even if it's single player only, like SimCity 2013), and at worst, some DRM can be straight up malware that can damage your PC or even prevent it from booting. DRM punishes everyone equally, both legal users and pirated copy users. Nobody is spared. What the fuck do you mean I need a "persistent internet connection" to play?! This is fucking SimCity. I'm returning the game back to Walmart and just pirate it instead. Fuck DRM! What does "DRM" mean?Digital Rectal Massage - A 2006 Ig Nobel Award-winning medical technique used to terminate intractable hiccups. DRM has been shown to stop hiccups within 30 seconds when "attempted using a slow circumferential motion." Please see Francis M. Fesmire's various medical publications for precise details. (1) "DRM was then attempted using a slow circumferential motion. The frequency of hiccups immediately began to slow, with a termination of all hiccups within 30 seconds." -- Fesmire, case report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. DRM - what does it mean?Digital Rights Management I tried transferring music to my iPod, but DRM stopped me DRM - meaningDigitally Restrictive Measures. While originally promoted as Digital Rights Management, this was in fact a publicly friendly term that misleads. The entire subject is build around stopping the use of the software and/or it's distribution. Thus Digitally Restricted Measures serves as a warning to the public of it's true nature. Also the word Management may be useful to the creators but not to the end user. Measures puts it in perspective. See the example for what a DRM means to end users. The product has a warning on it's side that says it "Comes with a DRM that will limit what you can do with it. Including if it will work at all. Also that after you get it to work, should anything change about the devise the product is running or playing on, it may cease to function and you possibly may never get it to work again. Purchase at our own risk." DRM - definitionDraconian Revenue Management, The DRM means that I can only watch the movie I paid $10 for, once. Arseholes >:( DRM - slangDigital Restrictions/Rights Management Dude, someone just cracked *Enter game here*, and it was just released today! Makes me wonder why they even bother putting DRM on it anyway. DRMDigital Rights Management, or some crap that means you can't actually use the shit you buy how you want to This stupid DRM album crashed my computer! DRMDigital Rights Management or, more correctly, Digital Restrictions Management. This new CD of mine is DRM'd and I can't put the tracks in my MP3 player DRMDigital *Restrictions* Management. You buy a CD. You copy its tracks to your computer. DRM steps in and restricts how you use those tracks -- you can only play the song XX times, you can't send it to anyone, you can't copy it to your portable audio player, etc. |
