Click bait - what is it?

'Click bait' is a popular word used on the internet. It is when you use a picture or sentence to lure people to click on your website/link/video, but is not always entirely true. For example, you could make a thumbnail for your YouTube video with bold letters saying: 'I NEARLY DIED?!' and lots of watchers would immediately click on your video because they want to know what happened. It is considered click bait only when the video maker lies about what the video is about.

I'm so mad! This YouTuber just click baited me! What a waste of my time.

Click bait

An online tool used to lure people into clicking on your website. It comes in a couple different forms:

One form of click bait is a thumbnail. Often these types of click bait will feature pictures of hot women or something else that can grab your attention

Another popular form is the caption of a thumbnail. These are used to build suspense and make you want to read the page. Some popular examples are "*politician* does *something newsworthy*", "you won't believe what *celebrity* did", and finally, "amazing trick to *do something hard*"

Click bait was very popular when youtube began, as many aspiring youtubers would utilize click bait to get people to click on their videos.

Guy 1: Look at that link! "Amazing trick to lose 50 pounds!"

Guy 2: It's just click bait

Click bait

A title or preview for a website, video, or other form of media that is misleading. It either doesn't have anything to do with the media or is providing false information.

An example of click bait is a title that says "Make hundreds of dollars easy!" but then links to an article promoting a window washing company. Or, a video title like "New gameplay of GAME!" with no actual gameplay in the video.

In a Sentence:
The website said that this article would tell me how to make a lot of money but it was just promoting a company, such a clickbait title.

This is the worst article I've ever read, clearly from a massive Microsoft hater or paid by Apple/Google. It's just paid FUD clickbait, wouldn't expect any better of news.com.au. Source: Whirlpool Forum 21 Oct 2012.
