Regret - what does it mean?

The most horrible feeling in the world.

You can vent anger, control lust, own up for guilt, but you just cannot undo what you've been regretting.

Regret is that full time shadow with no limitation of day, light, time, or person. Other than those who just choose to forget, of course, but you can't forget when it's screaming at you in the face every time you feel a smile or a laugh rumbling up your throat. Regret can make you wan to tear your hair out and slice your arteries into slivers of defunct tissue; it can give you self-esteem issues and take away concentration; it can ruin relationships and make you say 'FML' 24x7.

I regret being born to such loving parents because I am not 0.0000001% worthy of it.
I regret being born at all. The world would have been a better place and all those poor starving babies in third world African countries could have consumed the food that's been wasted on me all my life.
Little homeless orphans around the globe could have had my loving parents, poor things.
The money spent on my education could have been utilized on the education of those children in developing nations who work as child labourers 18 hours a day.

I regret not being able to do anything about the fact that I was born in the first place.

I regret being born.

Regret - slang

Regret is wishing you had said something when you had the chance.

I regret not speaking up and telling him how I felt about him. I wake up every morning and he is my first thought. When I go to bed at night he is my last thought. I wish I would have told him that I loved him when I had the chance. Now I will never know how he truly felt about me. Maybe if I had told him how I felt we would still be in contact. I will never forget him and I love him.

Regret

There's a difference between the kind of regret where you regret something you said or did, and the kind of regret you have from meeting someone. You are in control of what you say and do, you do not control who you meet.

The guy didn't regret a single thing he ever said or did to anybody, since most of it he did on purpose. If he had the chance to do life over again, he would do it the exact same way he had done it. But he did regret some of the folks he met along the way. He knew which faces he'd never miss seeing once he didn't see them anymore.

Regret

When you've done something you wish you hadn't, or hadn't done something you wish you had.

To argue which is worse is an exercise in futility; for the weight of their pain is subjective: the falling out of a friendship because of an unbridled tongue, the loss of the one you love because you didn't speak up, someone committing suicide because of something you'd said. The pain is there, festering; gnawing at your soul; relentlessly reminding you of its reason for existing: yourself. There's no one else you can blame; for there is no one else TO blame. All you can do is bear this burden, because it is a burden you've forced yourself to bear. And you do so willingly- subconsciously seeing it as penance for your sins.

"Nowhere can a man run- no matter how far- from that which resides in his mind's eye. In vain, he persuades himself that he's able, that he can roam the world eternally until his thoughts fall to the wayside in exhaustion, that he can outlast them as though they were bound by mortal limitations. In his delusion, he forgets that he cannot outrun himself; for his antagonist does not rest from without, but from within. Like a demon sitting on his shoulder, the imp whispers his barbs wherever he goes, piercing him with every step; and yet he continues, thinking his consolation to be measured in miles..."

Regret cannot be satisfied with distance- that is the moral of this story.
