What is Main Line?
The rich suburbs out side of Philly. Characterized by the R5 SEPTA line and Rt30. Became popular during the turn of the century as a summer retreat for rich "old money" philadelphians. Still home to some of the richest people in the country but increasingly over run with "new money". Lots of catholics in the area, especially in Berwyn or Paoli, because the catholics were brought out from the city as servants for the old money. Now everyone knows who you are if you were born here, and if you weren't they may not trust you.
Main Line also refers to a dying way of life. Main Liners (old money) would marry one another and used connections to keep their money and prestige. Now most old money names have no money left. But they still consider them selves above new money.
Also home to some of the finest public and private school in the country and numerous colleges.

Main Line - what is it?
I live on the main line and im not a spoiled little bitch that only hangs out with other spoiled little bitches. A majority of the people here might go to a private school, but that is because its by choice, most of them, if they wanted to they would be able to go to a public school. Not everyone has a house in avalon, and most people go with there friends who do. And no one looks down at people who dont have as much as they do, honestly most people dont give a shit how much money there friends parents make. Also no one wears polo shirts around, most of the kids wear it to school because its part of their uniform
The main line is awesome and people know it, they just dont want to admit it.
What does "Main Line" mean?
The term “Main Line” comes from the R5 line that runs through three counties from outside of Philadelphia, running parallel to Rt. 30. Many stereotypes about the ML are true, to a certain extent. It is a generally affluent and posh area mostly populated with Catholics, not WASP’s or Jewish families. There is a good amount of "old money”, but many people are able to afford such privileged living because of their jobs in Philadelphia or as entrepreneurs because of the popularity of the area. The ML also contains numerous very expensive High Schools, such as The Haverford School, Malvern Prep, and Agnes Irwin, whose tuition is over $20,000 per year. Teenagers do not commonly drive sports cars wearing collared shirts and board shorts. While the cost of living in the ML is high, the style of living is relatively normative, except for Radnor Township, the most expensive, very conservative, and least diverse area that would not suit any non Irish-Catholic family. Nowhere near every resident of the ML belongs to Country Club or owns a summer home in Avalon (think about it, that's way too many people). I am as "Main Line" as it geographically (I can hear the R5 train from my house), and I cannot attest to these stereotypes: I don’t belong to a Country Club or own a beach house or rent in Avalon; my family owns two Hondas and I wear sweatpants mostly. My neighborhood is religiously, politically, and racially diverse and most people could fit in perfectly.
I live in the Main Line. I take the R5 into work every day. I am married with three children who go to Malvern. I own two cars and I am an Irish Catholic from Bryn Mawr.

My house has 2 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms, on 1.5 acres - certainly not a "sprawling estate."
We do not own a shore home or vacation home, nor do we own a boat or any other sort of recreational vehicle.
We do not own a BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes, or any other high-class automobile; in fact, all of our cars are American.
I didnt get a car for my 16th birthday - I saved up money and bought one for myself once I turned 18.
I do not wear multiple, layered polo shirts and I certainly don't pop the collar of the one I do wear.

I was educated by one of the best public school systems in the country.
Judging by most of the spelling errors I've seen so far on this site, most of you Main Line haters would have difficulty recognizing the correlation between hard work, a quality education, and the privelege of enjoying the finer things in life such as driving a German automobile and living in such a beautiful and well-respected areas such as the Main Line.
While the Main Line may have its snobs who have had their good fortune handed down to them, it is one of the best examples of what a little more time spent working hard rather than hitting the pipe can do for you.
Main Line - meaning
The Main Line is not full of Jews. I just recently moved to the main line and i am Catholic. My family also doesnt own a Jaguar, or a BMW and for my 16th birthday my parents would never buy me a car. we dont have a house at the shore. Not everyone on the Main Line is loaded. People who have no reason to hate the main line just write stuff on this website to put other people down. However there are many Preppy kids on the Main Line, not all kids are shallow and rich snobby assholes. There are many sterotypes about the Main Line but not all of them are true.

Main Line - definition
An over the top affluent area in the suburbs of Philadelphia. It is now known as one of the most richest areas in the country.Many of the homes here are mega mansions or sprawling estates.Most of the people here shop at the King of Prussia mall and drive BMWs, Mercedes,Range Rovers,etc.The soap operas One Life to Live and All My Children are made representing this area and also the best selling books Pretty Little Liars and another book Main Liners a Legacy of Deceit.Many people here also own multi million dollar beach homes in Avalon New Jersey or Stone Harbor.Women here are usally seen dressed like fashion models and dripping in diamonds.The schools are among the best and the teens get to drive any car they want their parents to buy for them. There is so much money here you would think the people are printing it themselves.Move over Beverly Hills,Greenwich,Palm Beach,etc the Main Line is the new place to be!

Main Line - slang
Technichally the Main Line is a raliroad that runs from Philadelphia to the suburbs surrounding it including Bryn Mawr, Gladwyne, and Haverford.
The Main Line has always been full of WASPs and old money who belong to Merion Cricket and send their kids to expensive private schools. Recently the area has become infested with Juicy wearing, gum chewing, hair flipping J.A.P.s.
On each corner is a Starbucks filled with obnoxious people buying their 5 dollar coffee. On every road is a mercedes with an old blonde women tlaking on her cell and sparkling her large diamond rings in the sun.
The houses are massive and are cleaned buy cleaningladies adn the few "butlers". Each garage is filled with luxury cars.
The Main Line is a fun place to be if you fit in and have money. If you have you'll fit in. There is not much to it. If you overthink it you'll never get it.

Main Line
An Upper class enclave outside of Philadelphia. This elite neighborhood was the setting for the classic Hepburn/Grant/Stewart film "The Philadelphia Story," and smacks of Boodles Martinis and freshly pressed schoolboy blazers. The diversity on the Main Line goes just about as far as what model BMW one gets for their 16th birthday, and old money maintains huge mansions and sprawling estates. Quite a few celebrities who have opted out of the Beverly Hills lifestyle now call the Main Line home. The Main Line contains a disproportionate amount of upscale shopping, but is still absolutely breathtaking in its grandiosity and stone beauty.
I live on the Main Line and am super-rich because my Daddy owns starbucks, which is why I can buy all my clothes at Saks!

The Main Line is a suburb of Philadelphia. Many people here come from old money. Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Ardmore, Gladwyne, and Wayne are the most exquisite parts of this area. Many catholics, W.A.S.P.s, and J.A.P.s live here. Avalon and Stone Harbor are common places where many Main Liners have beach houses.
Kids and Teenagers wear Polo Ralph Lauren, Lacoste,Abercrombie, American Eagle, Juicy Couture, Michael Stars,and Solow. They shop at the King of Prussia Mall which is one of the largest malls in the country. Preppy is the best way to describe the main line.
Many exclusive clubs surround the Main Line. Catholics belong to mainly Overbrook Golf Club. W.A.S.P.s belong to Aronamink Golf Club , Waynesborough Country Club, Merion Cricket Club, and Philly Country Club. J.A.P.s belong to Radnor Valley Country Club.
Some of the highest ranked schools surround this area. Some of them are The Haverford School, Baldwin, Agnes Irwin, Episcopal Academy, Radnor, Lower Merion, and Shipley.

The Main Line is an amazing place to live!
Main Line
The R5 rail line that runs from Philadelphia to Paoli. (more recently goes as far as thorndale) Area originally created by wealthy philadelphians looking to build summer homes. Large growth after WW2 filled open spaces with dense residential. Towns range in wealth from Gladwyne to Malvern (recent addition according to some) Business Rt30 follows the R5 for most of its run and acts as the main drag through many of the main drags. Many private schools and high end car dealerships are located in the area. Not a very exciting area unless you are middle age and enjoy the country clubs. Manyunk, Philadelphia and even West Chester offer more social excitement for younger people. Malvern now considers itself part of the mainline due to the recent increase in higher end mcmansions and small gentleman's farms in charlestown and willistown. Newtown Square and West Chester pretend they are also associated with the mainline. Parts of Newtown Square run into Radnor and qualify. Homes range from the old estates that have mostly been subdivided into neighborhoods built by Bentley Homes and the like to the redone splits from the 60s and 70s real estate boom. Wealth is divided. There are the old money families who truly have money and usually older estate homes (Older homes $3 mil+). There are then the new money families that have large businesses, are professional athletes or celebrities. (Newer homes $3 mil+) Then there is the majority... high income families. Parents are higher ups business, larger corporations, media companies, pharmaceuticals, communication companies, lawyers, small business owners. They have large mortgages ($1 - $2.5 mil homes) and try to run with the previous two classes. Then there is the rest which don't fall in the scale.
