What is Career Limiting?
An action that won't necessarily get you "fired", but will create a self-imposed cap on your future. An unforced error that leads to the demise of your potential. Similar to black-listing; this is the move that causes you to get silently blacklisted. You're not necessarily gonna get fired, but, you're going to be wondering later on "why do I keep getting passed over for that promotion"? That CLM you made- that's why.

noun. An act by an individual, whether deliberate or inadvertent, that will most likely limit one's upward career potential.
John's coffee room chatter criticizing the company was overheard by upper management and quickly became a career limiting maneuver.
Career Limiting
A polite way of saying that an event or action may:
a) Cause an employee to experience a wealth of bad internal or external PR that could limit future promotion opportunities.
and/or:
b) Cause the employee to get fired.
This definition can also be used playfully amongst colleagues suggest how unfavourable a certain option may be or the relevant risk involved.
"I'll back up that computer before I run that update on Jim's computer, accidentally breaking the CEOs computer could be *potentially* career limiting."
