The film - what is it?
The outdated, but still used, equipment that the best photographers use to take pictures. Comes in a variety of sizes, from the small 110 film (in a cartridge that looks like a telephone receiver) to the large format 4x5 film sheets. This film produces negatives that are used in enlargers and scanners to create a print.

It can't be digital or HD tape, it has to be on FILM
SO, to any pretentious douchebag out there who thinks that they are soooo smart that they MUST use the word film- know that no matter how many times you refer to movies made after 2000, they are more than likely to not be films.
Juno, There Will be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and any other artsy type of movies to come out recently are NOT FILMS, no matter how dramatic or independently made that they are.
Harvey, Pyscho, Babe (I think), hell any other classic motion picture out there is probably a film

They did not call marijuana film in the 70's, they call it that on the show because Leo (the "hippie friend") works at a camera store.

When it's art, you call it a film. When it's mainstream garbage, it's called a movie.
FILMS: "Nosferatu", "Triumph Of The Will", "Citizen Kane", "Annie Hall", "Raging Bull", "The Weather Underground" and "Elephant"
MOVIES: "Fast and The Furious", "Titanic", "Spiderman", "You Got Served", and "Biker Boyz"

A word that people who think they are smart use instead of "motion picture," "picture," or "movie."
Not to say that "film" is a bad or stupid word. After all, it's just a word.
But for the most part, people with an air of pretension, in other words people who haven't necessarily earned the right to be a smart douche, tend to use it.
Also, people who refer to motion pictures as "films" tend to insist that everyone else use the term and often times believe that those who say "movie" are idiots.
Bill- Hey William, wanna go see the new Harry Potter movie?
William- Excuse me, I believe that they are called films, and no, I'd rather not see some mainstream garbage film. I prefer to watch films made by underground directors at my local bijou.

Bill- I see it as more of a movie showing how one man can become so corrupt with power and money. But I see where you are coming from Will.
