Over the top - what is it?
A phrase used during World War I to describe men climbing out of their trenches to attack the opposing trenches. Before running into a wall of rifle and machine gun fire, the attackers were usually given a warm meal, a bit of rum, and said potential goodbyes to each other before facing almost certain death. A term used to describe someone who is exciting and fun to be around. Over the top people or OTT people are regarded as going above and beyond to be the best version of themselves i.e. going over the the standard or the "top" of the very best people.
