What is military ball?

A prom night for JROTC cadets. JROTC cadets usually take a date or go with friends, its just a night for some dancing and talking.

Teacher: Alright cadets, the annual military ball is coming up, prepare yourselves.
Cadet: Oh shit, i still don't have a date.
