Definder - what does the word mean?

What is guinea?

To be sure, guinea is a pejorative, racist term for a person of Italian descent. I'm just surprised no one has hit upon my understanding of the word's origin, and therefore, correct shade of meaning. I don't know for certain, but I'd be willing to bet on the guinea fowl, which is:
- a traditional favorite of Italian chefs
- therefore, like its chicken cousins, often raised at the chef's home in a backyard pen, even as late as the mid 20th century
- a visually striking animal, described by my wife the first time she ever saw them as "Alice in Wonderland birds."
- prone to a God-awful racket when so much as gazed at crossly
- capable of frightening young children and the elderly

Little Timmy from down the street has been missing for over two weeks now. Local police suspect he was taken by a roving rogue band of aggressive guinea fowl with a taste for human flesh. The police found his little book sack riddled with bloody peck marks.

What does "guinea" mean?

"Guinea" is an American slang term for an Italian.
At the time of massive Italian immigration to the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centurys, most Americans lived on farms, and used a large fowl called a Guinea to keep the garden and lawns free of bugs and ticks, which they ate in great numbers.
A flock of Guineas "spoke" in a rapid, excited manner, and the newly arrived Italian immigrants spoke in a fast emotional manner that reminded the Americans of the sound that a Guinea fowl made, so the newcomers were soon dubbed "Guineas" by the local people.

(Son to Father) "Hey Pa, them I-talians sure do talk funny!"
(Father to Son) "That's rightly so boy, they strut around and babble like a gaggle of Guineas!"

The Irish-American word for Italian.

Refrencing the belief that Southern Italians recieved darker genes from the Moore colinization of Sicily, and the similar appearence to people from the Guinea coast of Africa.

It is often interpreted as being called part-nigger and non-white and is usually taken very offensively.

Mick: I hate those Tanglewood guineas. They think they run yonkers. The Westies are comin' motherfuckers!
Guido: Yeah right, paddy!

A British Coin, made from Gold exported from Guinea in Africa.

A Guinea is still used in British Horse Racing, and is of the value of one pound and five pence.

The word Guinea is associated with the coin/currency unit in the UK rather than as a reference to Italians.

There are numerous horse races such as the 2000 Guineas.

Italian racial slur; Only for One Italian to define another Italian. As Black People use the word N*gga.
Guineas and Guidos are NOT the same thing.
People usually say, Guidos are Italian. Not true. Guidos are basically wanna-be Italians. Men that dress like the stereotypical Italian or Italian American just to receive recognition by others. Many people tend to call Italians "Guido". Best bet is to just not call an Italian a Guinea if your NOT Italian, unless you want a pissed of Italian wanting to kick your ass.

An Italian Speaking to Another Italian.

Salvatore : Hey there you damn Guinea. How you holdin' up?

Roberto : Pretty good... You're self?

A Non-Italian Speaking to an Italian.

Bob: Hey ya guinea! Hows it going?

Roberto: Call me a guinea again and I'll push those words out your ass.

Ginney/Guinea Italians Pronounced "gi-nee." Came from "Guinea Negro" and originally referred to any Black or any person of mixed ancestry. This dates back to the 1740's. By the 1890s it was being applied to Italians--almost certainly because they tend to have darker skin than Anglo-Saxons/Germans. By 1911 the term began being applied to Hispanics, although the reference to Italians is the most common.

Surely you did not call him a guinea. I mean really, do you even know what that means?

The most vile racial slur that can be used against an Italian-American. Refers to the Guinea Coast of Africa; using this slur is a very offensive way of implying that Italian-Americans are non-whites (something we tend to get very defensive about!!).

Unlike the "N-word", which African-Americans sometimes use to address each other, no Italian-American would ever address another Italian-American using this word. Nor would they use the word "wop" (also offensive, but not in a racial way). HOWEVER, it IS common for Italian-Americans to refer to each other as "dago"; this is used the same way that blacks use the N-word with each other.

I'm not going to do business with that fat guinea bastard.
