Definder - what does the word mean?

What is filipino?

Ok, The Philippines is populated by Austronesian people. Austronesia means, "the southern islands." This is the name of our language family as well as our ancient culture and racial stock. For those of you that feel we are ASIAN, in part we are. The Chinese have been coming around since about 1000 AD. They have mixed with us over the years. During the 13th century trade increased with mainland Asia and for a while it became popular and a sign of status to marry a foreign wife among the nobility.

For those of you that feel we are PACIFIC ISLANDERS, the answer to that question is YES. Our native languages are closely related to Indonesian, Microneisan and Polynesian as well as the natives of Taiwan who were there before the Chinese. Like us and other PACIFIC ISLANDERS, they tattooed, have similar mythologies, practiced head-hunting, built canoes etc. So are Filipinos ASIANS or PACIFIC ISLANDERS? The answer is BOTH. Check out: apat-na-alon-tribe.com for info on our ancient tattooing.

A word on ALIBATA or BAYBAYIN.
This writing style is not indigenous to the Philippines. It was introduced by Indic-Malay traders about the 12th century. This is why words like "langit" are spelled "la-ngi" without the final "T." Hard consenants in Alibata were not used until the Spanish created the "x" or "+" marks to indicate a vowel closing consenant. This also explains why ALIBATA was not used to record histories etc. because it was not native. We passed on our geneologies and history orally like other ancient Austronesian groups. Alibata has been adopted into our culture like so many things in our past.

If you want to do a simple test to see if you are Pacific Islander, go to another Pacific Islander and ask them if "mata" means "eye" in their language too. Chances are that their word will be the same or very similar. Samoan, Tongan and Tahitian say "mata." Hawaiian is "maka." Chamorro is "ata."

What does "filipino" mean?

Loosely, any person who is a citizen of or immigrant from the Philippines.

Filipinos are an intelligent hard working group of people who are better categorized as Pacific Islanders than Asians. Although the 7000+ islands comprising the filipines are closer to the area known as asia, the culture and people share little else with their asian neighbors.

Filipinos do not use chopsticks and the preferred method of eating is with the bare hands, Tagalog (as well as the 140 other languages native to the the area) are of polynesian origin and structure. Traditionally, dance, mythology and ritual tattoos were a part of the culture, in similar fashion to most other polynesian cultures.

During the Spanish invasion, the Spaniards continued their practice of killing anyone unwilling to convert to Catholocism (i.e the native American indians of Western America). A smart lot, most Filipinos converted rather than facing a painful death. However, much of the indigenous culture was sadly lost.

She doesn't really look asian - maybe she is Filipino.

Filipino - meaning

1. a native or inhabitant of the Philippines.

Contrary to popular belief, Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders. Pacific Islanders is a strict term and refers exclusively to Oceania. People generally stereotype Asians being "East Asian", this in turn has made Filipino-Americans who do not fit the stereotype...to not want to be termed Asian.

However, the Philippines is part of ASEAN (Assoc. of SE Asian nations). They are not part of any of the Pacific Islander nations which, again, refers to Oceania.

Filipino - definition

A Filipino is a person who is native or linked to the Philippine Islands, located in South East Asia and around the West Pacific.

There is a big hype on what the Filipino Race is, Asian or Pacific Islander? Well, after searching the internet, looking at historical studies and talking about the issue (being Filipino myself), Filipino's are geographically located in South East Asia, Whilst the culture of the Philippines is very much similar to that of the Pacific Nations. For example, Parts of the Philippines practice traditional tattoing, the styles used and documented are very closely linked towards Pacific Islanders, If you are fluent in one of the 170+ Filipino Languages, they are very similar in structure and style to that of the Pacific Islands. More in Detail, the Filipino People are of Malay-Austronesian Descent, Austronesian people come from all over the Pacific, including the Philippine Islands, the race of Austronesians are widespread, from Native Hawaiians, to Somoans and New Zealand's Maori's, The Filipino People fall into the Category of 'Austronesian' as the race is linked into that Family through early settlers of the Austronesian race in the Philippine Islands. To settle this issue, the Filipino People are of Asian and Pacific Descent, through their Austronesian Ancestors. Whilst the Culture is a lot more Polynesian than Asian. The Philippine Islands are very complex when it comes to cultural and race issues, since the two issues are very diverse, The Philippines is a melting pot of the worlds cultures. Though, Traditionally, The Filipino People are of Asian and Polynesian Descent. Still their remains a large Spanish and Mexican Influence towards the race, there still remains a large number of latinasian people within the Philippines and internationally, The Filipino people are truly a very diverse Race, and are known to be one of the most diverse in Asia due to the multiple world powers that once colonised this Island Nation.

Filipino: Hey bro, Where all Filo
Samoan: Yeh bro, we all the same
Filipino: Austronesian

Filipino - slang

People and National language of the Republic of the Philippines.

Geographically the Philippines is in Asia. Racially however, the Filipino people/languages are Malayo-Polynesian. - Or more precisely Western Malayo-Polynesian which in turn is part of a much larger group: Austronesian... a diverse group which includes Malaysians, Indonesians, North Borneans, Aboriginal Taiwanese tribes, Aboriginal tribes from Madagascar and yes... the Oceanic branch of Austronesians: The Pacific Isanders including Tahitians, Hawaiians, Samoans, Easter Islanders etc.

The Filipino national language is based on Tagalog: the lingua franca of the Manila area. The Philippine archipelago has over 7,000 Islands with more than 140 native languages spoken throughout. Distantly related to the Pacific Island (Oceanic) languages, one can easily trace the roots by recognizing Austronesian cognates common throughout the Pacific Islands. Words such as "mata" (eye), "fitu/pito" (number eight), "manu/manok" (bird/chicken)_ essentially the same words in Tagalog and many of the Pacific Island languages.
- Other hallmarks of Austronesian languages include verb-stem reduplication, CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) word structures, inclusional/exclusional forms for the pronoun "we" etc.

Filipino

A Filipino is one who can trace his or her heritage to a 7,100 island archipelago between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It was a race who were in a land invaded by the Spaniards, Japanese and Americans but later gained their freedom through force or politics. It can be a proud race who become successful migrants here in the United States.

I am proud to be a Filipino. It is one of the most successful minority groups in the United States with the first immigrants facing extreme discrimination and hardships as nursing aides or low paid workers. But the next generations thereafter would later become successful businessmen, doctors, engineers, nurses, real estate brokers and other professionals. Of course, what makes some people ashamed of being Filipino are those people clueless about their rich culture (mostly found in California) who try to talk, dress and act black and TyPe likE dis. But the good always outweigh the bad.
