Definder - what does the word mean?

What is Yu-Gi-Oh?

An awesome anime and manga, that people need to stop saying is crap. Fangirls write fanfiction about said show, and often use shippings. Their favourite being puzzle, tender and bronze. Which includes the hikaris and yamis. Though 4Kids Entertainment did ruin the English dub by removing all violence. LittleKuriboh also created an abridged series around said show.
The show being about 16 year old Yugi Mutou (Yugi Moto) (being the height of a 10 year old) who is inhabited by The nameless pharoah (who we later find out is called Atem) who resides in the boys Millenium Puzzle. Yugi being the proclaimed King of Games, he attends Domino High along with friends Anzu Mazaki (Tea Gardener), Katusuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler) and Hiroto Honda (Tristan Taylor) and Ryo Bakura (Bakura) Seto Kaiba is another main character and sets up many tornaments to try and beat Yugi.
The show is set around Duel Monsters which is a card game in which you reduce your oppoets life points to 0. The cards are spilt into 3 catergories, Monster, Trap and Spell (Magic). The Monsters split into different types such as gravekeeprs, spellcasters, warrior, fairy, occult, burn, insect etc
Main antagonists in the show are Pegasus Crawford (Maxamillion Pegasus), Marik Ishtar, Yami Marik, Yami Bakura (Ryo being one of Yugi's friends), Noah Kaiba, Akhenaden and Zorc Necrophades (Zorc the Dark One).

"Hey you watch Yu-Gi-Oh! last night?"
"Yeah. What else would I do."

Yu-Gi-Oh - what does it mean?

1. Yu-Gi-Oh is a card-game/show that tries to get in on the markets created by games such as Magic: The Gathering and Poke`mon. There are essentially three types of cards in this game: Monsters, traps, and magic (the latter of the two are nearly indistinguishable from one another). Comparitively, Magic: the Gathering has creatures, sorceries, lands, instants, enchantments, artifacts, and then various sub-types.

When a card is played, it stays face down on the table until you either confront it with something, or the owner chooses to flip it. Essentially, the game comes down to having the biggest, meanest, and (obviously) most expensive cards you can get for you deck. This game is about as complex as Pokemon, and that is a pretty sad thing.

2. The show the card game is based upon. Many claim that the dubbing ruined it- just like everyone claims every other anime show.

The premise of the show is basically Yugi's grandfather is captured by the evil Pegasus, who wants to unluck the power of the millenuim pieces and cards. So Yugi, who has a pyramid necklace called a "puzzle," sets out with his friends to Pegesuses island to enter his card competition. He then beats people in impossible situations using his puzzle to turn into his taller, deeper voiced alter-ego. Depite the fact that he's twice as tall as midget-boy Yugi and has a easily distinguished voice, the other characters remain ignorant of the change. He then wins by places his trust in the cards and lectures the people he beats about how they don't believe in their cards or treat them right. In other words, it's the same recurring theme from Pokemon.

The further the show progresses, the more ridiculous it becomes with it's Egyptian pharoh thing and the recent "God-cards" (further alienating those who don't have or refuse to spend large sums of money to buy those cards).

Don't believe what fans say: this is, essentially, Pokemon all over again- just with darker looking monsters.

Now the Yugi-fans are going to get me...

Yu-Gi-Oh - slang

Another Japanese cartoon that has become so popular that it spread to other parts of the world. Debuting in 1996 in popular Anime/Manga magazine, "Shonen Jump", by creator Kazuki Takahashi. Main character 'Yugi' must help his dark half, an Egyptian Pharoah who has lost his memory, save the world from dark evil that never seems to end. A 5,000 year old game has been linked to the present day in this popular Anime series which has hooked (mostly) boys from 6-17.

That's the clean and nice version. This is the original.

When originally published weekly in the magazine, Yugi and his small group of friends, TΓ©a, Joey and Tristan, just try to get through life living in Japan while attending a private high school. Yugi seems to get involved in "adult" situations usually involving guns, gang violence, and sex, and has to find a way out. His other, dark, half comes out whenever he feels Yugi is in trouble and challenges his enemies to games where if they lose, they must play a "penalty game" where their life is changed to make them have a taste of their own medicine. That's what it was like in Japan, before it hit American Censors.

To anyone who feels this is just another PokΓ©mon or other Anime, blame the censors, not Japan. And, to those who are knocking this HUGE hit, how many graphic novels have you read that make you know what the real story is? Don't knock it 'till you tried it.

Person 1: Hey, did you read Yu-Gi-Oh book 5 yet?
Person 2: Not yet, but I can't wait!
Person 3: You actually read that?
Persons 1 and 2: Yeah. Who in their right mind isn't reading "Yu-Gi-Oh!"?

Yu-Gi-Oh

1: Anime/manga series by Kazuki Takahashi

2: Card game that started out pretty good but became slightly unfair after eventually evolving into summoning your whole deck on one turn with whack ass Pendulum/Link Monsters.

I just got OTK'd in Yu-Gi-Oh from a Borrelsword/Borreload Dragon and my opponent's 5000 monsters they summoned on one turn.
