The phrase originates from the 2010 case where taxi driver Derrik Bird went on a murderous rampage through Cumbria, killing twelve innocent people and injuring a further eleven. Apparently, the cause for his psychotic behaviour was a relatively minor annoyance - caused by drivers taking fares from the wrong end of the taxi lane.
Typically speaking, "going off like a Cumbrian taxi driver" is to overreact to a relatively minor annoyance, normally with extreme anger.

Taxi Driver is an all time classic film from the 1970s, starring Robert De Niro and a whole rememberable line up.
De niro portrays one Travis Bickle - a pyschotic, porn obsessed insomniac who is a recently discharged marine veteran from vietnam.
The story follows travis as he meets a beautiful young women named Betsy, and then becoming obsessed in saving a young 12 year old prostitute (Foster) from her pimp, and escaping her life of drugs, gangsters and murderers. This is essentially Travis' way of cleaning up the mean streets of New York City - and oh my does he do it in style. This must be watched if your over 18!

He goes to a scummy brothel with his 44.magnum and blows away all the scum to save one little girl. Very admirable and a timeless classic.

brilliant film...the portrait of a lonely disenfranchised member of society who has been cast aside because of his failure to conform to the ideals that have swept over his community...Robert Deniro stars as Travis Bickle, a Vietnam Veteran suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, the movie delves into his psyche which becomes more and more fatigued with each passing day, encountering the lowest rung of society. The movie climaxes in a crescendo of blood and violence in which Trais brings about a proverbial "rain" in which to cleanse the city of the scum who have ruined it. This movie has been blamed for many violent acts that have been committed in America, in the same way that now-a-days people probably would blame Travis for blowing away a bunch of scumbags including a pimp and a john, but infact, just as Travis ultimately earned commendation, so should this film, it can not be believed that this movie was ever the inspiration for any incouragable acts, but rather the warning light that such things will go on if we as a society continue to allow the scum of the earth to reign supreme and shit on all that does not conform to it's slimy ways...
Taxi driver is a misunderstood epic...a legend in filmmaking and possibly one of the top 10 greatest movies ever made...

Taxi Driver should have won the oscar for the Best Picture Award in 1976 over Rocky.
