Definder - what does the word mean?

What is Nerd?

OK, as a nerd with pride I would like to set some things straight-

- Not to be confused with a geek. Geeks act like Nerds but do not possess the high intellectual capabilities of one.

-Nerds are NOT always ugly. In fact, they can be as good looking as anyone.

-Nerds do not always have bad fashion sense.

-Nerds are not always social rejects. In fact, alot of them are very popular and have friends (maybe even a girlfriend)

-Unfortunately, Nerds DO Genreally suck at sports. This does not mean they are fat or unfit, they are just uncoordinated.

-Nerds DO have a life. We do NOT spend all day studying or doing schoolwork. We can have fun too!

-Nerds get picked on alot in High School by Jocks but will be rich and respected as adults.

-Nerds are generally very smart and get good grades.

-Nerds generally enjoy Computers, Gaming, Technology, Sci Fi, Comics and other stuff like that. But they can also enjoy other things, like for example, someone who is a nerd I know is also a big cricket fan.

-Nerds are not repulsive antisocial creatures. That is jock propaganda.

-Nerds are usually good natured and kind. They are forgiving and treat everyone as equal.

As you can see, nerds are not like the ugly, unfit, fatass social rejects you see on TV. They are normal people who have an interest in technology etc.

Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Very wealthy people

That guy whose heads the jocks flush down the toilet.

If you know how to reprogram the computer you are reading this on, you are probably a nerd.

Nerd - what is it?

A person who gains pleasure from amassing large quantities of knowledge about subjects often too detailed or complicated for most other people to be bothered with.

Often mistaken for Geeks, who aspire to become nerds, yet lack the intelligence, and end up giving nerds a bad name due to their poor social skills.

Non-nerds are often scared of nerds, due to their detailed knowledge, and therefore seemingly high levels of intelligence - and subsequently denegrate them as much as possible as often as possible.

Nerds exist covertly within the fabric of society, often choosing to 'nerd it up' in private or in the company of fellow nerds. It is for this reason they are feared the most - unlike geeks, who are easily identified, nerds can only be found out when casual conversation reaches a subject that they like nerding.

Geek: "I am a nerd"
Nerd: "Let's bash this nerd"

Nerd: "That'll teach you to go playing with my tesla coil"

What does "Nerd" mean?

I am a nerd. First of all, geeks are NOT nerds. They are people who often like video games or comics ect. but don't possess the intellect to be considered a nerd. Nerds are often given a bad name because of geeks that are mistaken for nerds.

Some things to know about nerds

1. Some nerds have a social life, we are not all social failures.

2. Nerds are not always ugly, we generally look normal, we only look "nerdy" in movies.

3. We are unfortunately generally not athletic, but they does not mean we're fat or weak. We are usually just uncoordinated. (Note: some nerds are athletic.)

4. Not all nerds study, we just retain information when we learn it.

5. We don't necessarily love all subjects (I do, but that's a bad example)

6. Nerd is considered to be a derogatory term, but nerds usually do better in life than jocks.

7. Most nerds love learning simply because its interesting.

The nerds you make fun of for liking school will be the doctors, engineers, and inventors of tomorrow. (For all you dumb jocks out there, those are people with the cushy jobs)

Think: Steve Jobs, Bill Gates

Nerd - definition

A studious and smart person who gets made fun of by haters. Nerds are not necessarily the 1960's stereo type with bottle cap glasses, suspenders, button shirts with pens in a shirt pocket, ect. Some nerds are good looking, some are smart, and some are both. Nerds are academicly advanced. However, most nerds are still socially challenged. Nerds are loners. :)

Nerd - slang

Someone who enjoys learning and obtaining new information in general for it's own sake, often without discrimination to different areas of knowledge. The key to recognizing a nerd is if they are completely indifferent to the application of what they learn; they are not inherently inclined to use or not to use the information.

Someone who is a nerd could also be a geek, who is passionate about highly specific interests, or a dork, who is a social outcast, but they do not have to be.

Person 1: Do you intend to do anything with your advanced degree in Russian Literature?
Person 2: I could, but honestly it's just interesting to study it. I could go my entire life without using the information I gain and still feel fulfilled.
Person 1: Wow, what a nerd.

Nerd

An individual who:
1. Enjoys learning
2. Does not adhere to social norms

A nerd is *not*:
1. A geek. The circles overlap, but they are not the same.

2. Someone who wears fake "nerdy" glasses
3. Someone who wears suspenders, fake glasses, and bowties on "nerd" day.
4. Someone who thinks of themself as a nerd, yet cannot hold an intelligent debate.
5. If you are reading this article to determine whether you are a nerd or not, you are not. Nerds do not need to look up the definition of "nerd", it is a label with no consequence whatsoever, and nerds have better things to do than play along with societal stereotypes. That being said, if you merely want to see what people think of when they think of the word "nerd", because human thought processes, societal constructs, and philosophy are so interesting, consider yourself a nerd.

Synonyms include booksmart

Nerd is only a label. It doesn't matter whether you are one or are not one. Nobody cares either way, and you should not, either.
