Definder - what does the word mean?

What is Long Island?

1. A small overpopulated land infested with rich assholes. It is known for their grossly overvalued property, overstuffed beaches, and highly congested traffic. The byproduct that this biological infestation gives off seems to be in the form of kick ass bagels and amazing pizza.

2. An over hyped densely populated diamond encrusted plastic turd.

"Driving into Long island is horrific. But, oh my god, the pizza..."

Long Island - what is it?

To all of you who are dissing Long Island:

You guys have absolutely no idea what you are talking about! Not all of Long Island is rural, in fact, little of it is. And not all parts of Long Island are wealthy, either. My family happens to be middle-class. I go to public school, and don't live in a rich neighborhood. Long Island is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And to whoever said that Long Island is absoultely no where near New York City, please get your facts straight. I live one hour away from the city - that sure is far, yeahh. ::rolls eyes::
Long Island is an awesome place to be, and don't diss it until you have seen how nice it is!!

If you live in the state of New York, you ARE a New Yorker.

What does "Long Island" mean?

Part of the suburban NY-NJ-CT metropolitan area of 19,000,000 people. Levi town was one of the first incorporated suburbs in the 1940's after the depression and WWII. Now it is primarily dominated by Guido's and Japs. Very segregated compared to other parts of the country I came to realize after living in Florida which

happens to way out as being a little too diverse for me. Many rich wealthy obnoxious towns, many poor ghetto working class towns but overall mostly middle class suburban towns with families. Pretty safe for being in such a populated place. The city is very accessible usually anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours. Look to buy a

house prepare to spend $500,000 or more for a decent looking home in a nice community. Schools are pretty good and the kids are mostly spoiled or live at home until they are 30 like on VH1'S Frank The Entertainer in a Basement Affair.

Person A: what did you do tonight in Long Island?
Person B: I went to 7-11, Dunkin Donuts and than got wasted and had my friend

drive to Taco bell? you
Person A: The Same it was so much fun.=

Long Island - what does it mean?

Island that extends from Queens to Suffolk County. Covers a large area of multicultural mixes. Suffolk County contains more than just the Hamptons and is not all rich or all poor. It is south and east of NYC. Although two parts of NYC are on the island the whole island is not part of the city. That is like saying Disneyworld is all of Forida, or Boston is the only city in MA.

However it does have the world's Biggest parking lot commonly known as the LIE.

Also some LIers are from NYC but not all and all LIers are New Yorkers.

1: Oh where are you from?

2: Long Island

1: Isn't it dangerous there in the city?

2: I wouldn't know I'm from Suffolk County.

1: Oh the Hamptons.

2: No they are an hour away.

1: Oh. Where are you?

2: Here.

1: Never heard of it.

2: Well it is part of Long Island.

Long Island - meaning

First of all, Long Island is not a penninsula. It is an island. Hence the name Long ISLAND. Secondly, I live on Long Island, in a prodominantly white suburb in Nassau to be specific and I have never heard anyone say that they live in "the city" if they live here. When most of us act "ghetto" we are basicaly mocking you all. We aren't "upstate". We're Long Island. It's a totally differnt portion of New York. Not all of us are rich snobs. Of course there are the select few who are, but around here, that's a minority. I'm middle class along with most of my town. However, two towns over is ridiculously wealthy and one town north is a bit, shall we say, poor. Being from upstate is not a bad thing. It's just got a different feel to it than from being on Long Island. Just like Long Island is significantly different from the city. And honestly, everyone that insults us Long Islanders is not necessarily jealous or wrong. We tend to be arrogant sons of bitches that think we're better than everyone else. But you all aren't completely right either. I've noticed that not many of you who have posted on here have looked at all the sides and are mostly ignorant assholes. But that's okay. If it works for you..have fun. Just don't expect to get anywhere in life. Oh and another thing. The whole "Yo, motherfuckaas from Long Island couln't last 2 days in Brooklyn!". Okay, we probably couldn't. But then again, I don't know why you're so proud that you can. Personally, I would not be bragging about how I live in a poor neighborhood with a high crime rate....

Altogether, I love Long Island and I'm really proud to live here. I plan on moving out of NY for college but hopefully I'll have enough money to come back here to raise a family. It's really for the most part a great place. Most people are nice and friendly. I love being from the South Shore and I <3 my Long Island accent. (I've been told on numerous occasions that my accent is exactly what is expected of LI people.) Oh but beware, there are 500,000,000 7-11's and McDonald's. And Sunrise Highway in Wantagh, Seaford, Massapeaqua, is covered in car dealerships.

And I hope you all will just stop insulting eachother and repeating the same pathetic opinions. If you're going to post something, make it something new and somewhat intelligent. Thanks. =

You Know You're From Long Island When...
No word ends in an ER, just an AH.
Oh, your parents are from Brooklyn? So are mine!

Long Island - definition

Long Island is used to describe the large continuous suburbs east of NYC (Suffolk and Nassau County). Long Island has an extremely high cost of living. Public transportation sucks so you must have a car to get around and the traffic is horrific! But Long Island isn't all that bad

The North Shore is mainly upper middle class and rich though there's still a lot of middle class people there. The North Shore is very preppy and WASPY and has a lot of Old Money.

The South Shore is mainly middle class to working class with some lower-income pockets. South of Montauk Ave is more affluent than the rest of the South Shore. The South Shore is kinda like a less extreme version of the 'Jersey Shore'.

The East End; there is the Hamptons and there is the North Fork. The Hamptons is generally very rich and glitzy while the North Fork is more calm and relaxed but still relatively well-off.

Bob: Where is Long Island?
Tom: It is a continuous suburb east of NYC AND NOT UPSTATE!!

Long Island

theres a big difference between wetsern LI (Elmont, Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Valley Stream, and other neighborhoods on the Queens-Nassau border) and eastern LI(Hamptons, Montauk, Port Jefferson and other areas on the East End). LI has a very diverse landscape and all different types of neighborhoods. NYC is the same way. It's pointless to attempt to generalize people from LI or from NYC.

I dont know why people don't go out and get a life stop arguing over the differences between LI and NYC

Long Island

I was born and raised on Long Island...I love it, but it's just a shame that the cost is rising so damn high...the gangs are becoming more noticeable..and if you aren't wealthy or on welfare..you might as well start thinking about moving ...I would also like to add, that I noticed many people claiming that Bay Shore is like a "ghetto"..with drugs on every corner, $10 blows ..etc...I have lived in Bay Shore for 39 years..and you are way off...Yes, it does have the bad sections of town, but it also has it's extremely wealthy areas as well.. I don't see these so-called $10 blow jobs on the corners..maybe at a train station once in a blue moon years back but those people are not seen around anymore...Maybe some of you who have stated about the "blow job queens" and drug users on every corner don't notice the ones you have because they are better hidden underneath fancier clothes? I may not choose certain towns for myself to live but I certainly don't call them "ghettos" or slums....

Some towns in Long Island may not be to another's liking but don't label them as trashy
