1. A ghetto is a section of a city predominantly occupied by a group who live there, especially because of social, economic, or legal issues. The term was originally used in Venice to describe the area where Jews were compelled to live.
2. Now A days Ghetto is used to describe many things that are poorly made or poor looking.

Ghetto - slang
Textbooks will usually describe the word "ghetto" as a place where a minority group dominates. Unfortunately these cities and towns of living are often run down with a high crime rate. That is part of the reason Martin Luthe King addressed the problems of African Americans being forced from a "smaller ghetto to a larger one." In pop culture terms it often refers to bad living areas (whether minority groups dominate or not) and things that are of low quality.

Ghetto
What people call people who they feel are below them, things you don't have, or don't do. Or what white people, and some black people like to call anything that black people do.

Ghetto
Sometimes blocks of government housing (cheap and of poor-quality so as to house the poor and needy) are called ghetto becuase these poor people resort to crime and stuff to get money. Because the whole block (usually there are several) is poor and criminal, it can't even be apprached by authorities in some cases because it is so derelict and vile. The government is now taking action and trying to get a mix of poor and rich and middle class people into these houses to even out the mix so it isn't so ghetto or derelict.
