Definder - what does the word mean?

What is Community College?

An institution that society uses to further sort, sift, and weed out its members into basic categories of winners and losers.

While some students will succeed in community college and obtain a vocational credential or transfer to a 4-year school (both of which are noble) many will find it just as difficult as their high-school experience and will drop out and work in a menial job for the rest of their life. Others will graduate with an Associate's degree in nothing special and will find jobs pretty much as inaccessible to them as if they only had a high school diploma or equivalent.

Either way, society helps its members find their own level, giving those with merit the opportunities they deserve while preventing those who don't meet a basic threshold of academic aptitude (or intelligence/ambition/discipline) from obtaining a degree they surely DON'T deserve.

Of course, this is NOT what CC's themselves SAY they exist for--it's what they ACTUALLY DO.

"I hate high school. I think I'll go to community college after I graduate/drop out." That won't work out.

"I'm going to the local community college to get my paramedic's certification."

Community College - what is it?

Named because they will accept anyone in the community. Other than online only schools like University of Phoenix or Walden University, they are probably the worst of all college education.

A community college is where you go when you think you need to go to college, but don't really want to. The rest of people think that they are going to transfer to a better school, but will just end up dropping in a couple of semesters.

The percentage of people who actually graduate from community college is only slightly higher than people who make a successful career out of being a waiter.

What does "Community College" mean?

A place where I went as a hope to transfer to a university as a junior. I earned an associates degree in three different subjects, and I soon realized that there are absolutely no employers who really give a rat's ass about an AA degree. I got accepted to a UC school that costs 27k a year and had to decline my admissions due to the cost.

College is simply too time consuming and expensive for what it is. Many of my buddies are graduating with BA's, MA's and are in some serious, reversible debt reaching close to 100k. Don't fall into the trap of thinking college is the only way to be successful. Create your own business or invest the money into something else besides a degree. Buy real estate in this down market and cash out kids.

What we don't understand is that there isn't a mysterious job market that opens up to us when we graduate from a Community College or University. It's just the same o' lame minimum wage corporate jobs that you could get without a degree anyway. Avoid the dogmatic trap and do something more beautiful.

Community College - what does it mean?

A transitional phase between the acquisition of a high school diploma (during which considerable luck was involved) and either homelessness or lower-middle class obscurity.

I got an associate's degree (abbreviated "FD" for its more common term, fake degree) from my community college because someone told me the reason I wasn't learning anything in school was ADD, instead of actually making me confront the fact that my head is full of mashed potatoes and that I would be a ditch digger for the rest of my life unless I chose to, God forbid, apply myself to my education.

Community College - meaning

1. A two-year college that provides inexpensive college classes and credits for students as well as societies and connections. Some also offer dual-enrollment for talented and intelligent high school students.
2. A springboard for students who require assistance with the transition from high school into college.
3. A greatly misunderstood but highly useful institution that is useful for students' educations and personal knowledge stores while being easier on the pocketbook.

I'm a dual-enrolled student at a local Community College, meaning I'll be able to enter a four-year school as a junior earlier and pay less for a college education.

Community College

A type of college you pay for by course units over the traditional semester-set fees in universities.
A term which people on Urban Dictionary rant the shit out of, because they thought they could graduate with an associate's degree and be set for life, or take any courses they want and expect to transfer to a top-prestigious school. Sorry, but that's not how it works.

It's nobody's fault but your own if you weren't aware of what credits would transfer or not. You're supposed to plan this before you enroll in your classes. If you plan on transferring to state college, ideally within the same state, you're not going to have issues with your credits. However, taking intermediate algebra over college algebra isn't going to fly with most universities. If you feel your college or guidance office failed you, why don't you rant on about that particular school, so that people can spend their money elsewhere?

Trying to convince people on Urban Dictionary to avoid comm. college, or mostly trying to belittle people who do go because of YOUR misfortune is just petty. When you're in tough economic times, and financial aid doesn't give a pot to piss in, people don't have much of a choice these days. Community college can offer great benefits for some people, including affordable tuition & high flexibility, while being able to take your standard freshman/sophomore courses.

A lot of people transfer from college to university, and a lot do not. Nobody is to blame in life but yourself.

Urban Dictionary user: LOL community college is for losers yo
*goes back to playing xbox*

Me: Is it really? I'm sorry to hear that.

Community College

Positive: The best move financially when getting a college degree. You can transfer somewhere else after your two years of CC and not be in nearly as much debt as some others.

Negative: An academic black hole. Regardless of how smart you are, or how much time you have, this school will suck in all but the very well disciplined. The environment is full of people ages 17-50 who fully intend to graduate but never actually do. This is referred to as BHA (also known as black hole aura). Even people who had good grades in high school who attend CC are likely to be sucked in and see a sudden drop in their GPA. The ease of the classes will also fool some into thinking college (and thus University) will be easy as well.

Warning: If you aren't VERY disciplined AND focused, don't go here. End of story.
